Took the family here for my daughters birthday. We were staying in the hotel and it was convenient to walk downstairs for dinner.
The place looks nice. Decent decor(except for the large balls above the tables that every waiter hit their head on), smelled nice, employees were very kind and welcoming.
Got seated right away. Waitress was nice and friendly. Ordered food and drinks. Wife and I both ordered Caesar’s. Both were warm, like the Clamato juice was left on the counter. Pickle was hot, like it was warmed in the microwave. No water was offered to the table either. Daughter ordered a Shirley temple. Pretty much all orange juice.
Appetizers came. Bread and French onion soup were solid. Kids appetizers show up. Each plate had 1 strawberry, 2 pieces of orange both old and greyish, 4 slices of cucumber and I kid you not, 6 ounces of ranch. Not sure who eats that much ranch with 4 old, grey slices of cucumber but to each their own.
At this point my wife and I were not worried and laughed about service so far.
While the waitress was kind and friendly, she didn’t come by the table often and other waitresses would come and check and ask if we needed anything. It’s not like it was busy either, most of the tables around us were empty. The waiters didn’t communicate with each other because we would ask for an item from a different waitress and our waitress would have no knowledge of it.
Dinner came and it was meh. They messed up the steak temperatures between the three steaks ordered at the table. Daughters steak was tough, hard to chew and more raw than she’d like. My prime rib was over done and average. Wife’s steak was under cooked and tough. All vegetables on the plate were over cooked and tasted like water and charcoal.
At the end of the meal, my daughter was told she would get a desert for her bday. Our waitress left to get a desert menu. After 10 minutes of waiting, another waitress came by and said the kids got ice cream with their meals. Tried explaining that the other waitress was coming with a desert menu and we wanted to desert to go. There was confusion and ice cream was brought for the kids in a to go container. At this point, our waitress finally came back with the menu and was confused as well. My wife and I didn’t feel like figuring it out and just payed and left.
The experience wasn’t terrible, but for $200 I just hoped for more. Also, with being so close to the keg, you would think they would put more of an effort in to being a better place to dine.
Do your self a favour and go to the Keg. I...
Read moreSo if you know me, I typically talk about places that I really like. This time I decided to try a steakhouse in Edmonton called CHOP. I was traveling by myself and decided to sit at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and offered me a nice glass of Chardonay that was around $18.00, this is a bit high but I was traveling and thought it would be nice to treat myself. I was drinking my first glass and the bartender noticed that I was irritated after picking two fruit flies out of my wine. She took away my wine and gave me a free glass and apologized for the fruit flies. She thought it was a good idea to put a beer coaster on my $18 glass of wine after my second free glass of wine, which I never finished either of them. Next, the manager ended up walking by my chair and noticed that there was a "free steak bites" coupon on the floor and asked me if it was mine which it was not, so he said to me, here's some free steak bites on us. I ordered a filet with broccolini and French fries, the filet was $59, which was expensive, and I ordered it at medium rare. It came to me as well done, the broccolini was cold and the french fries were hot. I was so hungry and tried to muster through the steak but didn't feel it was worth the money. The bartender asked me if she wanted to replace it, but I said no again. The manager came by and said he would take it off my bill along with the two glasses of wine that had fruit flies in it which was nice, but I lost my appetite at that point. Steak bites magically showed up on the bar, but they were not good as the BBQ sauce seemed really burnt and bitter tasting with tendons running through the meat. As I am still sitting at the bar fighting fruit flies and trying to eat a nice meal, I finally lost my appetite asked for my check and decided to leave. The manager told me that they had a pipe burst and they've had some fruit fly issues, but in my experience, fruit flies come from a dirty bar that is not cleaned and disinfected. I would not want to come here again as the food quality, cleanliness, and value is completely overrated and not worth it. The customer service and manager of the restaurants were great to me but that does not reflect on the $100 dinner that I was ready to pay for. They took off everything and only charged me $18.00 for one glass of wine. But I will not be coming here ever again. Customer service was good but the food...
Read moreWe usually stay at the Sandman Hotel which is right beside Chop. I had a reservation on Thursday evening. We arrived at the restaurant and were greeted by staff. The hostess asked if we wanted somewhere more secluded and private to talk. That was ideal for us as my partner and I don't often go out for dinner. I'm not sure what the hostess was thinking, perhaps she misheard our response to her question. We were situated by a big open window which was quite bright, and next to a table with two loud young children. The children were screaming and yelling and the parents did little to control their behavior. I still tried to make the best out of the situation. As time went on the children started to become louder and impatient as they were done their meal, They then started to play music/ videos out of their tablets that their parents had given them. Between the screaming, and multiple media devices playing different audio behind me, it was extremely distracting and start to cause a dull headache. Our server was absolutely awesome, She was polite and very knowledgeable of the menu. The food was delicious. However I felt cheated of my romantic evening by being situated by a large bright window and screaming children. There were many other spots which would have been more private and secluded. The atmosphere felt more like a Denny's than a Chop steakhouse. Once again the service and the food were amazing but it all seems moot when the atmosphere was ruined. It put a damper on the evening. I just wish the hostess would have put more thought into where she seated us given she asked if we wanted a secluded and intimate table good for conversation.
I felt robbed of our romantic meal. We didn't get to talk about what we wanted and we had to watch our conversation because of young children around.
We spent about $370 between the two of us. Given the money we spent I will probably choose another option for a nice meal next time. For that price...
