I've had various ramen in Langley, New West, and Vancouver... I haven't tried em all, but I've eaten in at least 9 different ramen shops. Yet just based on taste, this new place's mayu (crispy garlic, customizably spicy) ramen is my new favourite.
The noodles were curly and neither thick, thin, nor flat. They were neither soggy, springy, nor doughy. It sounds plain but I enjoyed them more than most. Easy to like if you enjoy instant ramen and just want a non-deep-fried upgrade.
The toppings were portioned for the egg, pork, shiitake, garlic, and corn to be featured. Perfectly soft boiled egg... flavorful, fresh and chewy shiitake... sweet corn. Mung bean sprouts were present but barely noticeable; these aren't added raw, and seem to have their own oily coating, so maybe they were panfried? The garlic slices were thin and seem to have been baked at a low heat-- dry and toeing the line between chewy and crispy... they rehydrated in the broth after a while and had a fairly strong garlicky flavour. Green onions were fresh and chopped in the usual ringlets. Nori was finely shredded, and there wasn't enough to taste much. I chose pork chashu (choice between chicken or pork) on mine, and it was nicely braised and a little browned. But that pork chashu was the SWEETEST I've ever had-- comparable to chinese char siu end pieces, but with a japanese flavour profile. I like somewhat sweet meat, but was almost too sweet for me.
The pork broth was very balanced; somewhat creamy and oily, but not greasy or thick with fat. More creamy than Jinya but nowhere near as thick as Gmen. I tasted pork (but not too porky), garlic, niboshi fish stock, shiitake, probably some mentsuyu as well.
I chose a 4 outta 10 on the spicy scale. I usually enjoy a medium spicy. This time I wanted to taste all the flavours in full depth, but still get a bit of a kick. The 4 was enough to cough and make my nose run, but didn't hurt me or diminish the...
Read moreI ordered takeout from here, and the food was packaged nicely and order was ready on time. The price and portion size was good (toppings were included in the price), however that is all the positives I have to say about this place.
The 2 ramen I ordered were Shio, and Mayu. The shio was very salty, and mayu was super salty. I know salt levels are a personal taste, however this is beyond my tolerance level. (For reference, the broth at Santouka is considered salty for me, and I usually ask for less salt there). If there is an option for less salt/msg then I would give this place another chance.
The pork was of the lean kind, and it was quite dry/tough and overcooked. Judging by the colour, I suspect the meat was pre-cooked and re-heated for my order.
The rest of the ramen was fine. Noodles was ok, ajitama was the right done-ness. The nori they gave me was shredded. I think this may only be for take-out, as I see pictures of sheets of nori for dine-in.
I also ordered gyoza and takoyaki. The gyozas were actually Korean dumplings. I'm sorry, but they are not the same thing. These dumplings have thick skin, meat is mushy, and have noodles inside. The biggest difference is the shape and size where they don't have the large flat bottom for the burnt crust to form. The takoyaki was for my wife, and since I did not eat the takoyaki, I will not comment on them.
I wish I can like this place, as their price and portion was decent. However the saltiness of the broth and dryness of the pork was a clear miss for me. I would've given them 2 stars, but considering the price and lack of good ramen out here, 3 would...
Read moreWe had a good meal at Hiroshi. It's not the best ramen in the GVA; but is certainly a good choice for a quick bite.
The place is clean and well kept. It is a typical galley style restaurant with one long bench seating along one wall. Tables and chairs are placed along this bench, with the exception of a large group table. We were impressed by how clean the whole place is. Not easy in a busy restaurant.
Service is fast and friendly. We were seated immediately and given menus. Our waitress was very nice and answered our questions. She was busy; but we didn't feel ignored or rushed. One point to mention is the menu had large sections blocked out with paper covering. I think it reflects a reduced sushi selection on offer.
Food was tasty and not overly salty. This is a style of food for the busy and not intended for long languishing consumption. Slurp it up to experience the full flavor and texture of the ramen. The rice and chicken were also tasty, if not a little heavy on the sauce. The sushi was delicious and well worth picking up for lunch on the go. We were satisfied with it all.
Go here for quick, tasty, unfussy food. It's not a romantic spot or great to impress a new client/boss; but friends will enjoy the relaxed vibe. Worth a try and...
