Short review: Our server was nice. Atmosphere was good and cute. Food tasted horrible. Everything was low quality or not properly cooked and just tasted terrible. Gave me a stomach ache too. Extremely disappointed and would not recommend this place.
In depth review:
Tan Tan Ramen - I've had tantan ramen at other places before and it has always tasted amazing except for here. Not spicy at all (which I don't care much about anyways) but there was barely any flavour. You could not taste the peanut butter at all. Pretty much felt like I was drinking warm water or plain vegetable broth. The ramen soup also developed a weird taste midway through. Started tasting bitter no matter how much mixing I did and I ended up not being able to finish it.
Tuna Bakudan - This was the worst sushi I have ever had. The rice tasted partially cooked and was very big. The tuna was extremely chewy. The tempura did not have the golden colour to it and was not crispy at all. It was very soft and had zero flavour...seemed like raw tempura. This dish was so bad we had to send it back and asked for a refund after eating one piece each.
Salmon Maki - Now I've never had a bad tasting salmon maki as there's only 3 ingredients involved but this was absolutely horrible. Each piece had a different taste to it (1/6 pieces tasted good but the remaining were horrible). Some of the pieces had partially cooked rice and tasted old/not fresh and the salmon had a strange taste and aftertaste to it. The seaweed was quite stretchy and the whole maki was so chewy and tasted poor. This gave me a stomach ache too. I normally eat sushi 2x a week and go out often so I know for a fact I do not have a sensitive stomach.
Only nice things about our experience here was how fast the food arrived (6-12 mins), had a very nice server who returned our bakudan and did not charge us for it, portion for ramen was big, and the atmosphere is cute and had nice vibes.
Overall would not recommend to anyone. Very disappointed as I live near the neighborhood and always walked past Kawawa while at the mall. Location is convenient and lots of parking available but I would go anywhere else but here. Hopefully they change their receipes and add more flavour with high quality ingredients. I could see this place becoming extremely popular if it weren't for the quality of the food. Once again, extremely...
Read moreMy husband and I went today with our 4 kids. He just finished a Chemo treatment and was not feeling great so just wanted some ramen the kids and I wanted to try their all you can eat sushi. I was then told sorry because we wanted all you can eat he must also because they don't want to risk sharing... He said it's fine I don't really want to eat anyway and I said ok he isn't eating then and she told me that's not allowed because he might eat some while they aren't looking. My husband then said whatever you guys eat I will go sit in the car you guys enjoy. So my terminally ill husband that is not feeling well had to leave so that we could eat because he might steal some.... Like wtf. I then asked the prices gave my kids ages 3, 6, 8, 10 and was told my older 3 kids would be $16 each and my 3 year old was free because 4 and under are free. She usually shares with one of us and was just going to have ramen with her dad as she doesn't eat much anyway and only had a couple pieces of sushi. Had she been a little older they would have charged me $16 for her and she wouldn't be able to sit at the table with us if she isn't eating. The waitress then came back saw my oldest daughter is a larger girl and said oh HE is actually an adult and will cost $30... I said SHE is 10 you said she would be $16. Then said oh no I never said that. She brought us the all you can eat sheet which wasnt a great selection compared to other all you can eat places we have been especially for the price. The sushi was just ok and didn't taste very fresh. I was turned off from all the BS so I was turned off and didn't eat anywhere $30 worth. I was also told if I ordered any sashimi for the kids that I would then be charged $30 for the kids too... They are 10, 8, 6 and 3... We have been here a fair few times for Ramen which used to be really good but they have removed a few of out favourites from the menu and have gotten stingy on the meat. We loved the Metro Town location and then were super happy to find one in Surrey as we are from Abbotsford and drive all the way there specifically for Ramen and its a long drive. We usually go about once a month but this is the last time I think after the...
Read moreHonestly if I could I would rate it no stars. Absolutely horrible service and food. Got into the restaurant and waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order after we flagged down a staff member and they said the would grab someone. Took our order and brought us back tea with grease in it. We told our waitress and she told us that was the tea leaves floating in the tea… it is very clearly grease. She reluctantly gave us new tea and didn’t say a word when she took the cups away and gave us new ones that also had grease in them.
First item comes out and we get agedashi tofu - I don’t know where to start here this is a pretty basic dish as it’s just deep fried tofu with sauce. The sauce was horribly watered down and has zero flavour to it. We really had to stop and think if we had covid because it really had no flavour to any of it. We had once piece each and asked the waitress to take it away.
Second item out is the tobiko fried rice and came probably about 5 minutes after the tofu- again a pretty simple dish but somehow they managed to mess up this item too - completely flavourless and it really is just fried rice, no egg. Ate two bites and gave up on it.
Third item was the shoyu ramen and we waited 20 minutes for this. For a ramen restaurant you would expect this item to come out pretty quickly but nope. This was the worst ramen I’ve ever had. The chashu was dry and overly salted, the bamboo tasted fresh out of a pre packed old bag, the noodles were hard with no flavour and lastly the soup was too oily and salty with the dirty pork flavour.
Absolutely not worth your money.
Also: if you’re going to make your kitchen visible - you should probably make sure your chefs are wearing...
