Just want to leave an objective review as the other pictures and reviews make this place (basically the upstairs/second floor of Khao San) seem like a restaurant or a place that has a substantial food menuâŚit does not. Now thatâs totally okay, but just you wanna know what it is and what it isnât before you go there, right?
Yes itâs its own entity but itâs also mainly I would say a spot to get a drink while waiting for a table downstairs, at Khao San. Itâs very small. For some reason I thought since itâs âinspired for Bangkok night marketsâ that it was large, spread out, with ample seating, it doesnât really. That one picture on google that shows the bar and the row of tables, thatâs basically it. And the food menu is very small, theyâre no main courses, no noodlesâŚjust oysters, small bowl of fried rice, fish balls, oyster mushroom skewers, shrimp chips/crisps, tiny apps/finger food type stuffâŚagain, totally fine, but just donât post photos of pad Thai on here cuz thatâs downstairs. This is a cocktail bar. Theyâve got a small menu of cocktails, good prices, $14-$16, and the drinks are good, not incredible but good. They have Singha on tap, and a few other beers, no Thai beer in bottles, thatâs also downstairs, and downstairs has no draft but you can order draft beer upstairs and bring it downstairs which is nice. And thatâs basically it. Itâs really tiny, it doesnât really feel like a night market in Bangkok. The music is very loud top 40 pop, but the lighting is great. Downstairs the music is very loud top 40 pop and the lighting is pretty harsh. The food upstairs and downstairs is very good. And the service is very friendly. All the Khao San sister restaurants no one really answers the phone when you call and reservations I believe are by email and in advance only, nothing within a 24hr time frame so having this bar upstairs is greatâŚit means you donât have to wait in the lobby. Thatâs about it - if youâre going to dinner at Khao San check it out, if youâre coming here as the main event, either donât arrive starving or put your name on the list downstairsâŚand youâll get your pad Thai &...
Read moreSuch a shame really, had all the promise to be a nice regular spot, as itâs really kind of hidden/off the beaten track and it has a very good selection of drinks/food for some casual drinks/bites. Our first server was delightful, although after the first round we had a new server which is when things started to go downhillâŚoriginally there was four of us, with two joining later on in the night however by the time they joined we had to go up to the bar ourselves to get drinks as our server continued to avoid us for the night after we had raised the question of whether the 16oz drink they served was actually 16oz (turns out it was 12oz), then we were left waiting for our bill and when we received it, it had included a 20% gratuity (which the server never stated when it was handed to us), we were told that it was mandatory for groups of 6 which I understand but the server never actually served us when we were a table of 6âŚwe had to look after ourselves. We then said we would pay it but didnât agree that it matched the service we received, at which point the waitress stormed off and a manager came back who was combative, rude, and complaining that he had such a busy day thereâŚwhich was irrelevant to our situation. The attitude of the manager and the server really changed the mood of our night, and I would go out of my way to discourage people from every going here and going to somewhere close by that would offer much better (actual) service and to not make you feel as if the problem lies with you as the customer after...
Read moreWent there after the Jays vs Tampa game. The bar is located above the Khao San Road restaurant and our wait time at the restaurant was 30 minutes so the hostess suggested we could go upstairs and hang out at Sue Bang. There were a total of 8 people upstairs including us. The server/bartender took the order for the group of 4 but didnât ask us or the other couple. We figured it would be easier for us to order if we sat at the bar while she prepared the drinks for the other group, we just wanted beers as we were there to kill time. She ignored us and the other couple for a while, not even acknowledging our presence. Busy bartenders/servers usually say something like âIâll be with you in a minuteâ. A few other people walked in and shouted their orders so she proceeded to serve everyone else while still ignoring us. When we called her (seated right across from her at the barstool) she just replied with âwhat?â. She continued to serve everyone else, spending more time balancing ice cubes and limes on cocktails than serving us. After waiting for over 30 minutes we just left when they called us downstairs. While leaving she had the gall to ask us âyou donât want beer now?â Hard to believe this place is part of Khao San road, stark difference in the service standards between...
