SEPTEMBER 07, 2025:

butter & blue has a really fantastic selection of small treats that all come at a fairly reasonable price, and for the most part, all the flavours are done very well! also the outdoor dining area looked very very nice. and they warm stuff up for you too!

the spam and egg bun was really delicious — ESPECIALLY when dipped in the spicy mayo (the real star of the show). it wasn’t really spicy at all, but it was super light and tangy and salty, with a hint of asian flavours to it (probably from kewpie mayo). it completely changed the flavour of the salty spam, mild egg, and thick bun. the bread, topped with aromatic sesame seeds, was perfectly warm and the exterior was baked with a comforting, brown slight crunchiness. underneath, the dough was very pillowy and chewy.

the cheddar scallion biscuit was also delectable. it had a prominent cheddar taste and just a little bit of refreshingness from the scallions. i think there was also a sprinkle of salt on top, and that was really nice. it wasn’t super crunchy or anything, but a bit crumbly and the inside was fluffy and not dry at all. i also liked dipping this in the spicy mayo!

i really enjoyed the matcha mochi cake (which was more like a brownie) because of its unique texture and mouthfeel. i got a nice “corner” piece and the exterior had a baked crispy crunchiness to it, but the entire middle layer was a thick, gooey glob of mochi. as for the flavour, there was honestly barely any hint of matcha (maybe a slight bitterness?) and it wasn’t very sweet at all (but i don’t mind that part).

the only thing i was a tad disappointed by was the lemon scone and butter (which was barely a sliver, like thaT was not worth an extra dollar). i found that this scone was much crunchier and crumblier than the cheddar scallion one, but im not sure if i preferred that. there was only a bit of a lemony citrus aftertaste, and a bit of sweetness from the crunchy sugar topping. the maple cinnamon butter didn’t really have any flavour or add much (except for a nice coldness on the warm interior), but i guess you could taste a bit of light maply sweetness? i don’t think i would get this again, id probably try one of their other treats next time.

——————————————————————— SEPTEMBER 12, 2025:

i swung by to grab the nori rice krispie as a little treat and it was so unique! it had a REALLY prominent salty seaweed taste, but there was also that classic sweet gooey rice krispie marshmallow. it was dense yet airy and super soft as well. i still preferred the other items better, but this was really...

Five stars doesn’t even begin to cover what Butter & Blue means to me. This was our place—my ex-girlfriend’s go-to spot that quickly became one of the most special parts of our routine together. We’d sit out on their beautiful, peaceful patio—tucked away yet somehow in the middle of downtown—and it always felt like a quiet little escape from the noise of the world.

She was an iced coffee girl through and through, and I was the one double-fisting both hot and cold drinks—sometimes a matcha latte in one hand, an oat latte in the other. The drinks menu here felt like it was made just for us—every item perfectly aligned with our shared caffeine obsessions. But it wasn’t just the drinks. Their rotating selection of small bites and pastries—clearly made in-house with love and care—was something we genuinely geeked out over. We’d often order several, just because “we had to.” That was our thing: same taste, same instinct, same joy in the little things.

We even brought her dog once. I still miss that dog deeply. She got a little nervous on the patio, but I didn’t mind—I had less than half my drink left, and the staff were kind and understanding, just as they always are.

Butter & Blue is something rare. It feels calm and grounding, even though it sits just off some of Toronto’s busiest streets. The walks we took to get there, the time we spent in that cozy little corner—it all became a part of something bigger. A part of a chapter in my life that was real and full of meaning. And though it hurts now, I’d never trade it for anything.

One of my only regrets? I never bought one of their branded baseball caps. It felt like a piece of the place I could carry with me. Maybe one day I’ll go back and finally get it—something tangible to honour how deeply this little cafĂ© became a part of a time I’ll never forget.

Butter & Blue is more than a cafĂ©. It’s a memory, a mood, a moment you never want...

Seems like a slightly Hong Kong-inspired cafe, since they offer drinks like Ovaltine, Horlicks, and milk tea/lemon tea. I would probably skip these options since they are overpriced here ($4-6) and you can get them much cheaper, and probably more authentic, at an actual HK cafe. They also charge extra for dairy alternatives, if you cannot have milk. However they don't charge extra for iced vs hot drinks! I got the hot strawberry matcha latte which was good, although quite typical. The pepperoni bun was also tasty, but tbh all their baked goods looked delicious so I'd want to try them all.

On an early Sunday afternoon, they are already really busy. The indoor seating is all full (90% people on their laptops tho) and there's a short line waiting to order. My only complaint was that the pick up area at the counter is super confusing. Once you order, you kind of just stand around waiting for your food/drinks, which makes the order line and pick up line a bit fuzzy. Especially if you're not sitting inside, you just have to wait around the counter until you can grab your stuff and go, and the interior is already quite cramped. Since we ordered two pastries, one staff member gave them to us first, but then we still had to wait 5+ min for our drinks, and you don't know who else has ordered drinks ahead of you, so if you happen to order the same drink as someone else, you'll have no idea whose it was. That same staff member also wasn't too friendly, like when I was confused whether a drink was mine or not so I asked a nearby customer, she curtly said "it's yours" and I was like oh ok, I guess I'll just leave now đŸ˜©. I probably won't come back here unless it was much less busy, bc maybe she was having a bad day and didn't wanna deal with all the people, but it seems less hectic as well. The outdoor patio had plenty of seats tho, but it was...
