Imagine, if you will, amidst the hustle and bustle of the biggest and busiest city in the country, hidden down a quiet side street you'll find a humble and modest storefront window peering into a charming little refuge of childhood indulgence, as you set foot in it's doorway and are welcomed in by it's promise of sweet decadence.
This oasis of frozen dairy deliciousness is Carter's Ice Cream.
One of the few local vestiges that has become that small, but mighty establishment, that has braved that perpetual atmosphere of change in a city in flux, and where progress has rendered many a business unsalvageable, families still flock to this institution that has been embraced by the surrounding community.
This is because of what lies at the core of its success, which can be found in it's very name. Carter's Ice Cream, named after the owner's daughter, is old-fashioned in the sense that it breathes new life back into the nearly forgotten sensibility of family and community that once were the hallmarks of businesses our parents grew up with, that seems to be in short supply just about anywhere else today.
I had the pleasure of paying a visit on Carter's this afternoon, and everything about this ice cream shop reminded me of summer days when heading on out with my parents for a cold treat was an event in and of itself. Of the selection available from Kawartha Dairy, I chose a scoop of salted caramel truffle in a cup. Trust me, were it not for my diet, I would've happily asked for another.
Do yourselves a big favor. Keep walking past Baskin Robins. It'll be well worth the time it took to reach this gem of...
Read moreMy family loves coming to Carter’s, and when we have visitors we always head over for a little treat. The ice cream is on the high end, but we don’t mind because we like to support local.
We usually have great service when we are served by the younger staff, unfortunately today we were served by a woman with dark hair who was not as patient. My kids and I were waiting, and my toddler was yelling and becoming impatient. The woman who served us felt comfortable enough to try and correct him not to scream “we don’t scream”.
My child can’t speak(he’s non verbal), so this is his way of communicating frustration. It is not your place to correct other peoples childrens’ behaviour, especially if they aren’t causing harm to anyone. You don’t know if children are neurodivergent, and I hope that you can move forward with this in mind. If you can’t be tolerant to kids and all kinds of behaviours, then you’re catering to the wrong clientele. Unfortunately i do not feel welcomed...
Read moreI went yesterday Aug 25, 2021. I was walking with my son, friend and my dog. We came across Carter's and realized nobody had a mask. ( I know it's my responsibility) . Lady came to the door and I asked would you happen to have a mask? She looked at me with her big eyes and said for you? I said yes. She kept staring at me and said no not for you. I said can you please tell me what ice cream you have. Again with those big eyes ( I'm saying this so people will know as I didn't get her name) what are you blind? It's there on the sign. I looked at her and walked away. I love their ice cream but it's something I can get at Metro. Thought I'd support a small but very well known business. All I'm saying is if this lady reads this. If you're having a bad day stay home. Many parents bring kids here and shouldn't have a rude lady welcoming them( for a lack of...
