Without question, the best take out pasta I have ever had, a fusilli pomodoro, wickedly delicious and ridiculously inexpensive. Will work my way thru the rest of the menu.
So, next day, went back for gnocchi in the garlic, chilies and olive oil sauce (the other vegan sauce). Gnocchi don't travel well so I ate in the restaurant. I aspire to gnocchi this good, Once again, excellent. Had the basic tiramisu (I'm picky here, I've had the best, meh to the rest). Good dessert but I'm not writing home about it. Tomorrow, I will start the vegetarian sauces.
Update: Two more visits: Pesto with gnocchi (and a little chicken). Pesto was not what I expected: light, creamy and generous. It was an absolute delight. Unless you need the protein, skip the chicken. Next, fusilli bolognese. Meh, chilies might have helped, but was not impressed. That said, we are still batting 750, and it is the more expensive sauce that failed.
Back again, this time for the Norma. If you like the tang of eggplant (I do) you will like the Norma sauce, every bit as tasty as the pomodoro, with deeper herbs and aubergine tang. Better than any of my attempts. Thumbs Up (batting average now at 800). PS the cashier has figured out I'm working my way thru the menu.
Two more visits and I am suspecting a bias on my part. I tested the formaggi and Mama Rosa -- the cheese sauce and the tomato-cream sauce.
I like Dal Moro's vegetarian imagination more than their non-vegetarian. The Mama Rosa is good, but the creamless Pomadoro is better. Al Formaggi is good, but it is an Italian mac and cheese. I would rush an order of this (with a little garlic powder) to any sick friend who's fever just broke. Solidly nourishing: it was 18 hours before I wanted to eat again. I wasn't "overstuffed," I wasn't "bloated," I was well nourished. That alone should assure a good review, but I wanted to be enthusiastic. That said, I have no idea how you do a cheese sauce that rates an enthusiastic review.
Four sauces left; we will see...
Read moreVery disappointed.....when I was in Venice I didn't get to eat at Dal Moro's as they were closed for renovations...so I went to their competitor Bigoi and had some of the best fast food pasta in my life, for only 5 euro a meal (keep in mind that a can of pop will cost more than 2 euro)...I was so excited when I heard Dal Moro's open its Toronto location; I just had to try it.... What a let down to be honest...The price is a lot more expensive, and that raised my expectations significantly as well... The taste of the sauce is very artificial, the mushrooms were from a can I believe. I also made a huge mistake by asking for some parmesan cheese...when I heard parmesan is free I thought No Way!! Stupid me still went for it hoping that there is a slim chance that it's real Parmigiano-Reggiano parmesan..... Well it's fast food after all and I should know better. They did tell me it's real parmesan but I don't blame the staff for not knowing the difference. Turned out, of course it's not real parmesan.... The white powder completely ruined the taste of my pasta. I'm sorry, I have to admit that my expectations were probably too high....I love pasta and can pull off a much better tasting pasta dish in my kitchen in 10 minutes with much better ingredients and will cost almost nothing. This expensive fast food pasta left some foul/artificial taste in my mouth after the meal....for this price point, I'd rather walk across the street to Sensotei ramen for some authentic Japanese noodles. Btw, the staff is very nice and friendly. I kinda feel bad for giving it a 2-star....still, for the quality/price ratio, I don't think I'm being...
Read moreAglio e Olio was barely edible and tasted like Chinese food.
Wow that was bad. I don’t usually go to pasta spots because I cook pasta well and I know what it means to have a good pasta, but today I was exhausted and needed something fast. I ordered the aglio e olio with peporonchino. First big mistake was putting garlic powder. Garlic powder is not something that is traditionally used and moreover it adds a really funky and off putting taste to a pasta that should be really simple and elegant. Second mistake was adding so much chili that my lips are still numb. Between the garlic powder and the ungodly amount of chili it tasted a lot like sezuan food. I eat very spicy food all the time and even for me it was way too hot. I had to go home and balance it with the juice of an entire lemon before it was edible. The only good thing I could say about it is the pasta was fresh.
While waiting about 10 minutes for the food, I found the servers to be fairly pleasant. My only gripe with the staff is that they were about 6 of them in the very small restaurant and were all loudly speaking in hindi. I don’t have a problem with people speaking any language in the restaurant but the whole energy there was what I imagine it feels like to go to a college in India. Like no offence but I’m not here to watch a sitcom about young immigrant kids that all work at the same restaurant. I’m sure it would be a good show but definitely not a good restaurant.
I didn’t have high expectations but I thought it would be at least edible and taste...
