This is a tough one. I love supporting local places and I have wanted to go in here for quite a while but the experience was underwhelming even with pretty low expectations. They were running a dollar Taco special which they might rethink because I don't think they sell much other than dollar tacos which I don't think is a long-term viable business plan in this day and age. When I walked in the tables were kind of messy and there were no napkins in any of the napkin holders and there were a couple of uncleaned tables with very few guests around so I'm not sure what was happening but it wasn't a great first impression. This place is kind of a Tienda/restaurant which means a store and restaurant. They have a good selection of popular Mexican sauces and snacks that you can't get at normal convenience stores and a refrigerator with some soft drinks. I was greeted by what I assumed was the owner and it was pretty perfunctory possibly because of the language barrier or possibly because most people don't know how to greet their guests properly. I was actually prepared to order a variety of things because I wasn't particularly interested in dollar tacos but he basically said How many LOL. I started to talk about a quesadilla and he suddenly was selling me a $17 plate which was not where I was headed. So I settled on the tacos and I asked him how big they were and they were pretty small but it's all good. The minimum order is 5 and he said I could sit down and he would serve me and I could pay at the end. Tacos came up and they were small and like a traditional Mexican taco joint they really had no filings to speak of other than the meat which I think was pork and they were served with three kinds of sauces to be added by the individual. I really love getting all those sauces but I don't see how they are financially viable for a dollar taco.
In any case the sauces in this case we're not particularly good. I probably shouldn't complain for a dollar but I don't really want something that I don't like at any price. I recently ate at a similar joint just down the road which served five or six sauces which were better and in huge quantity. Again I don't know how they can serve so many sauces nor do I have any idea what they do with all the sauce left over since most of these tacos are so small you could only get a tablespoon or two on them and that is a question I'm going to have to start asking at these Mexican restaurants. I hope they aren't throwing it all away but I also hope they aren't recycling at all and putting it back into a giant container to be used to refill on the next order. I ordered a Jarrito Mango flavor Mexican soft drink to wash it down which was pretty darned good. A few people came and went but the place was pretty quiet overall and the vibe was a little eery quiet. Almost waiting for something to happen. My total bill came to about $11 with tip which is ridiculous in the city of Toronto so I think maybe they should raise their prices and raise the bar a little since nobody needs to be eating dollar tacos on Bloor Street and it will increase the likelihood of their ongoing viability. I look forward to going back again and trying one of their main dishes but it's really hard to order something that's going to cost you four times as much because it's also hard to imagine something will be four times as good and that's a bit of a barrier to delve further into the menu. Regardless of what I said above I will continue to support my local restaurants and not follow the trendy luxury foodie crowd. I think a foodie should be someone who wants to eat real food from real people who are making a real living and not focused on becoming celebrities and go beyond the social media benefit to getting to know people in your...
Read moreThe worst mexican food I’ve ever had in my life. The service was terrible when I walked into this place about 3 hrs ago I sat wating for someone to come to the table to serve me. I had to get up and get one of the servers because they were ignoring me. There were about 4 people there besides me. When she came up to me asked me if I was ready and said I yes, I had in mind ordering some lengua tacos which they didn’t have at that moment. So I settled for enchiladas verdes that she recomended based on how I decided to ask for something that had rice on it then. The worst decision I made at that moment. Before the food even came out I asked for no cheese on my food since I am allergic to lactose. Service was fast when they brought it to me and to my surprise there was cheese on beans. I asked the server/ waitress to take it away because I clearly stated I was allergic to it and she did, two seconds passed by and she came back out with the same plate telling me that the cheese was only on the beans and the rest was fine. Basically insinuating that I should eat one thing and ignore the rest of it. Why should I if I was going to pay $15 for that plate incluing my drink and also if Im allergic and I told her why I shouldn’t even have that on the plate on the first place. I bargained with her to at least remove the beans with the cheese and bring me a new plate. They did, yeah they removed the beans with cheese, from on top leaving the rest with cheese at the bottom of the plate and placed new beans to cover the mess and served me the same plate without cutlery to even start my meal. To make the story short I ate a bit till I saw the cheese. Left the remaining food in the plate paid and walked away. Also I kinda felt bad because as I am black felt like the service was terrible towards me due to my skin colour, when they were serving people normaly and not me. Now Im here at the hospital with severe stomach cramps, vomiting and my lips are swallen. So much for a craving for Mexican today. ...
