Halal, vegan & GF options. Details ⬇️ @levant.pizza is co-owned by Chef Nader, Palestinian-Canadian and Tamer Agha, Lebanese-Canadian. Located at 899 Bloor St W. They have developed a very unique concept, grounded in quality Sicilian breads and the flavours of Palestine, courtesy of Nader’s mom. The dough is made with quality 00 flour, cold fermented for nearly 4 days and baked with lots of Lebanese olive oil to develop a crispy undercarriage. We ordered a large pie with three styles, six slices each for $37. It feeds 4, especially if you’re getting dessert/appetizers. Our favourite was the Upside Down, inspired by maqluba. Originally a layered one pot rice dish, they’ve concentrated its essential vegetal flavours into pizza toppings - confit garlic, roasted cauliflower, eggplant, cherry tomato, 7-spice labneh and their house cheese blend. On a previous visit, I really enjoyed the OG shawarma with slow roasted lamb & beef brisket. Probably my favourite meat option to date! The locally made burrata with date molasses, walnuts and olive oil is an excellent starter. Don’t leave without dessert, aka hot and gooey kunafa. The style specific to the Palestinian city of Nablus is my favourite of all the versions that exist in the Levant and beyond. They have the OG three layer. First, a blend of mozz and akawi cheeses that replicates Nabulsi cheese fairly. Next, crispy shredded dough. Finally, a topping of pistachios and floral sweet syrup. A fascinating alternative is the less sweet and fairly intense tiramisu kunafa, with espresso syrup, cocoa powder and mascarpone. If you would like to visit more Palestinian restaurants, I recently posted a guide to Palestinian restaurants in the GTA and a Reel about an excellent Palestinian brunch spot in NYC. Happy eating! PS the music is by @nemahsis (https://www.instagram.com/nemahsis/), an amazing Palestinian-Canadian artist. Check her out too! And watch the Anthony Bourdain episode where he eats in Israel & Palestine while you’re at it. Levant Pizza isn’t your typical pizza place where bold flavors and distinct characteristics hit you from the first bite. Instead, it’s a journey for your palate, with subtle nuances that reveal themselves as you savor each mouthful. What stands out initially is the beautifully chewy and airy dough, but as you keep going, the delicate blend of spices and the harmony of the toppings come alive. During my first visit, I tried the OG Shawarma, Upside Down Maqluba, and for dessert, the Traditional Kunafa. I also sipped on their Hibiscus Refresher, which had a surprisingly complex flavor reminiscent of a well-aged wine. Compared to other pizzas made with 00 flour, Levant Pizza’s dough maintains the right amount of chewiness but leans towards a softer texture. It almost feels like a different flour blend was used, and I mean that in the best way possible. The dough’s thickness, characteristic of Sicilian pizza, was spot on and very satisfying. The OG Shawarma had a pleasant balance of flavors with its chewy and soft texture, complemented by a thoughtful mix of spices and well-chosen toppings. Although it’s more intense compared to the Upside Down Maqluba, it’s restrained enough for those new to Mediterranean spices. Upside Down Maqluba is now my personal favorite. The bright flavors, balanced with the richness of the cheese, and the slightly charred roasted cauliflower and smoked eggplant, were absolutely divine. The garlic confit and the labneh creme tied it all together beautifully, creating a dish that felt both familiar and exotic at the same time. The soft, creamy texture of the Kunafa, enhanced by the gentle sweetness of the rose and orange blossom syrup, made for a comforting finish that contrasted wonderfully with the bold flavors of the pizzas. I can’t end this review without mentioning the Hibiscus Refresher. It was an unexpected delight, with a complex flavor profile that was both refreshing and sophisticated, almost like enjoying a glass of mature wine without the alcohol. If I had one suggestion, it would be to amplify these unique combinations even further. The subtlety and restraint are admirable, but in a world dominated by fast food and instant gratification, some might find this a bit challenging to appreciate at first. This is a pizza meant to be savored slowly, not hurried through. Overall, Levant Pizza is a fantastic choice for those looking to explore refined and innovative flavors. Just be prepared to take your time and let each bite surprise you.

This was our first time here and everything was so delicious! I got the new Egyptian Beef Shawarma Sandwich, the Hummus Board and the Hibiscus drink. Egyptian Beef Shawarma Sandwich: $9.50 8-hour braised brisket roasted with tomatoes, onions, parsley, and beef jus - stacked on a soft potato bun with tahini and pomegranate molasses. The beef sandwich was very flavourful and loved reading the beef was slow roasted for 8 hours! It had a bit of spice to it but loved the cherry tomatoes inside it. Hummus Board: $19 Creamy garlic confit hummus, crowned with zesty sujuk sausage, tender beef brisket, and smoky fire-roasted cherry tomatoes. served with signature 4-day fermented breadsticks. The Hummus Board was loaded with flavours and I loved the combination sausage and beef with the hummus and cherry tomatoes. I also enjoyed using the breadsticks to scoop up the hummus and other yummy ingredients. I really liked learning they are 4 day fermented breadsticks. It sounded healthier which has become important to my diet and gut health. The hibiscus drink was delicious and refreshing! Perfect on a hot day like today. My friend got the OG Shawarma Pizza and we both loved it. It looked like a work of art! And we loved the beautiful, colourful plates! The OG Beef Shawarma Pizza: $21 Parsley pesto, mozza, braised beef, pickled onion, cherry tomato, tahini, arugula. Overall I loved the look of the foods and the great customer service. Big thanks to our server and to the cook John who also greeted us. I’m glad we went early when they opened at 11:30am. It’s a small place and the few tables filled fast!

Ordered takeout for the family based on recommendations from a friend and all the over-the-top reviews online. The (not) pizzas are medicore, lacking flavour and just disappointing. All four (not) pizzas we tried tasted basically the same. Perhaps it was an off night. The salad, too, dressing had no flavour. I mean, if you love baked dough, a little greasy, this may well be your jam. Otherwise, I don't quite see the point. Not a satisfying meal. Kids (and me) rated it 6 out of 10. Won't try again.

Update: I gather there was a reply from Levant to this review, but I can't see it. I have no quibble with the intent of these folks; I'm sure they are doing their best. And I really wanted to like the food and support them. Other folks seem to like their food, based on the rave reviews. So, OK, for Levant. And I wish them well. The food is fine, but just fine. Flavours are way lacking, but again, if that's the intent, ok! We decided it makes a good breakfast, as it's so much dough and very little substantial topping (protein, flavour, etc.). The cheese has no flavour. The meat toppings are meager. The roasted cauliflower is just there; no flavour. So it makes a nice kick start for the morning. As a canape at a party, this could be good with a mix of other foods. Say, a small sliver/finger with a crisp rose wine. But it's hard to eat a whole square, as, again, it's just a ton of bread. I've never put leftover take-out in the fridge and seen it sit there for days. Teenagers usually eat anything. But not this. I don't like to quibble about prices, but I can find so much better value in flavour, nourishment, and enjoyment at half the price. God bless Toronto! Again, not to attack Levant, but as a note to anyone who reads...
