Wyck Recommends: Muraya (East Liberty, Toronto) Rating: 3.6/5
Come for the chaat, stay because… well, there’s nowhere else in Liberty that does it like this.
Muraya used to be a cozy, lowkey dine-in gem with actual servers and a vibe. Post-COVID? It’s more of a chaat station with seating. You walk in, pay up front, and awkwardly figure out if you’re supposed to seat yourself. It’s not rude — just distant, like a friend who forgot your birthday but still likes you.
That said, the Aloo Chaat is undefeated. It’s cold, hot, crunchy, tangy, messy, and perfect. Sev on top like golden confetti, chunks of potato swimming in spicy-sweet yogurt land. The Samosa Chaat can be good too, but heads up: the samosas aren’t made fresh (or don’t taste like they are). Still, for $10-ish, you’re eating something that feels like a full-contact sport of flavor. I don’t bother with anything else on the menu anymore — and honestly, I don’t think I’m missing much. Their mains tend to be spice-heavy in the “did someone drop the whole box?” way.
Service: No complaints, but no conversations either. It’s mostly self-managed. If you’re eating in, just know you’re doing it solo-style. Cutlery? Water? Napkins? You're on your own, boss.
Pros: ✔ Aloo Chaat is still an elite-level dish ✔ Indoor seating if you need it ✔ One of the only solid chaat spots in Liberty
Cons: ✖ Zero dine-in vibe — feels like you’re intruding ✖ Not a full-service experience anymore ✖ Mains are forgettable and over-spiced ✖ Samosas not made fresh (allegedly... but it shows)
Final Take: Muraya’s Aloo Chaat deserves a shrine. It’s the only reason I keep coming back, and honestly, it’s enough. But the charm of the old Muraya? That’s gone. No host, no warmth, just food in a white bowl and a silent room. It’s not a bad experience — it’s just not a whole one. Stick to what they do best, take it to go, and don’t expect a full-service sit-down. For Liberty Village, that’s sadly par...
Read moreI rarely ever go out an rate a food place like this but our meal from this place (called Mother India on Uber 4.7 rated with 5k+ reviews) was SO SO bad that I just had to do this. Firstly the duplicity of having a different Uber eats name than the actual restaurant and the fact that it doesn't mention at all that it's a roti place on Uber is absolutely bizarre.
We ordered the saag paneer, malai kofta curry, samosa chat and gobi 65.
The only thing that tasted good and was presented well was the samosa chaat which is why it got 2 stars from me. Else I'd give it a 1 star!!!
The saag paneer and malai kofta looked NOTHING like the pictures. That was off putting to begin with. But when we tasted it, I felt cheated! For the price, the food was point blank bland, and the ratings felt paid for becono same person would rate the food we got today as excellent! There was nothing "malai" about the kofta. It looked bad, and tasted worse. It was tough, full of the frying flour batter, had more potato than paneer and still felt like I was eating cardboard! The gobi 65 was super salty and that ruined the whole dish as well.
I understand having a bad day, but this was HORRIBLE. I threw up right after I ate the food and I wish I'd spent my money elsewhere. Even If the food would be average, it would at the very least still...
Read moreThe food was excellent! Some of the best curries we’ve had in the GTA. I ordered the Saag Paneer in a Roti Wrap and my wife ordered the Chana Masala in a Roti. Both were to die for. Seriously, so yummy. I can see why there are some complaints about service but to be honest, all you really have to do is grab the server’s attention. This place has two dine options (patio and restaurant) and also has takeaway, and a small staff, so they are pretty busy; and (even though there is no sign saying you have to wait to be seated) unless you specify that you are dining in, you may get overlooked. But as long as you tell them, or call them over when you are ready to order, then the actual service and delivery of food is very prompt. All around super great place and will visit any time we are in the Village. Not sure why people were unhappy with the price. This did not seem any more or less costly then general eating out in the GTA. $10-$15 per entree is not expensive in my mind. And a lot of reviews seem to take issue with the amount of chicken (or lack there of) in their dishes. We didn’t order any chicken so can’t say for sure, but portions were not an issue for the vegetarian dishes. My Roti had a pretty even split of...
