I recently had the misfortune of trying a falooda at Paan City, that left me thoroughly disappointed.
Falooda, for me, is supposed to be a symphony of flavors and textures—a perfect balance of sweetness, creaminess, and that refreshing hint of rose or kulfi. But this one? It was like someone had dumped a bag of sugar into a cup and called it a day.
The sweetness was overwhelming, to the point where it masked any other flavors that might have been there. The subtlety that makes falooda so special was completely lost. The vermicelli was overcooked and mushy, and the basil seeds, which should add a delightful crunch, felt like an afterthought. Even the ice cream on top, which is usually the crowning glory, tasted artificial and overly sweet.
What made it worse was the lack of care in presentation. Falooda is as much about the visual appeal as it is about taste, and this one looked like it had been hastily thrown together. It lacked the vibrant layers that make you want to dive in with a spoon.
In a city as diverse and food-rich as the GTA, where you can find some truly amazing South Asian desserts, this was a letdown. It felt like a missed opportunity to showcase the magic of falooda. If you're going to serve a dessert with such a rich cultural heritage, it deserves more...
