For people who live downtown, Rol San is considered a gem for dim sum lovers. It’s not as good as the dim sum places you find in the suburbs like Markham or Scarborough but it’s passable. Some of the food here are quite good, the only drawbacks are the service and the price. It seems every 2 or 3 months they hike up the price. Good service is also nonexistent here so don’t be disappointed when you don’t feel welcome the moment you walked in, or when you feel ignored by servers, or you’ve been overcharged, etc. This is how they are and they’ve been in business for more than 20 years because people come here for the food and not for their lousy service. I have tried all their dim sum dishes and IMO these are the best tasting dim sum to order in Rolsan: Shiu Mai (Pork Dumplings with Shrimp): Shiu Mai is my all time favorites and the first thing I grab whenever I go to dim sum restaurants. If you’ve never had this, it’s kind of like a juicy meatball, held together by a soft dumpling wrapper. Rol San’s Shiu Mai is one the best I’ve ever tried. The texture is toothsome but juicy and tender at the same time. The filling is bursting with rich and meaty savoriness. One order comes with 4 pcs of delicious Shiu Mai and I bet you will eat more than one. Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings): Har Gow is one of those dish that you will either love or hate depending on how it was made. I have tasted Har Gows where the dumpling wrappers are perfect but had a terrible filling. And then there are some that have flavourful filling but the wrappers are either dry and breaks apart when you grab with a chopstick. Not the case with Rol San’s Har Gow. The dumpling is translucent and flavourful. It has a smooth texture and able to hold the dumpling shape well. Fried Eggplant with Stuffed Shrimp Paste in Soy Sauce What I like about this dish is that it’s not oily even though it’s fried. The eggplant plus the shrimp filling makes this dim sum dish even better. Combined it with the flavourful sauce and this is one dish that is very satisfying. Deep Fried Seaweed Roll with Chicken & Shrimp: I was surprised on how good this dish was! If you’re not a dim sum aficionados, you won’t even know about this dish as this is one of the lesser known dim sum. I know people always order the Shiu Mai or Har Gow but trust me on this, try to order this dish and you will be hooked. Shaped in a form of cigar, it’s crunchy on the outside, chewy bouncy inside and bursting with umami flavour. The smokey seaweed hugging the shrimp/chicken mixture and served with mayo sauce is one delectable dish you will surely enjoy. Char Siu Bao (Steamed BBQ Pork Bun): I love Rol San’s BBQ Pork Buns! They make this perfect snowy white bun which is so delicious. Cracked open on top, you can get a glimpse of the barbecued pork filling. You cannot go to a dim sum restaurant and leave without trying their soft, fluffy buns with chunks of BBQ pork in a sweet savory sauce. Honorable Mentions: Fried Bean Curd with Stuffed Shrimp Paste in Soy Sauce - the taste is similar to the stuffed fried eggplant but with fried bean curd. Pan Fried Beef Short Ribs - delicious and tender, this is one dish you should try. Steamed Bean Stick Rolls with Mince Pork & Shrimp Paste in Oyster Sauce - another umami flavoured dish. The beancurd wrapper, sauce, coupled with a combination filling of pork, shrimp, mushrooms and veggies is packed with flavour and is absolutely yummy. Meh and not worth it: Deep Fried Squid Tentacle - rubbery and tough, enough said. Pan Fried Turnips Cake with Pork Dry Shrimp & Chinese Bacon - they definitely skimp on the filling ingredients here (especially the turnips) since all I can taste is rice flour and starch. Not good compared to other dim sum places. Steamed Custard Buns - I find Rol San’s Custard Bun dry and not soft. The custard filling also doesn’t have the creamy texture compared to other Custard Buns I’ve tried so I didn’t enjoy this dish.

Rol San: Unveiling a Chinatown Legend (and My New Favorite Spot!) Toronto's Chinatown boasts a vibrant culinary scene, but for truly authentic and delicious Chinese food, look no further than Rol San Restaurant. I discovered this gem just a few months ago, and let me tell you, it's quickly become my go-to spot. In fact, I've already racked up five visits – a testament to the incredible flavors that keep me coming back for more. The magic of Rol San lies in its dedication to authentic cuisine. Forget fancy decor – this is a classic "hole-in-the-wall" experience where the focus is purely on the phenomenal food. Each dish I've tried explodes with fresh ingredients, expertly prepared to deliver a symphony of taste. Whether you're a seasoned Chinese food connoisseur or simply looking for a delicious and affordable dining experience, Rol San has something to offer everyone. From succulent dim sum options (perfect for a light lunch or shared meal) to hearty noodle dishes and flavorful stir-fries, the menu caters to a variety of appetites. I've personally fallen in love with their [mention a specific dish you enjoyed], but every dish I've seen served has looked (and smelled!) absolutely mouthwatering. The best part? Rol San defies the "expensive Chinatown" stereotype. The prices here are incredibly reasonable, making it a fantastic value for the exceptional quality you receive. You'd be hard-pressed to find food this good at such an affordable price anywhere else in the city. So, next time you're craving authentic Chinese food in Toronto, ditch the flashy restaurants and head straight to Rol San. It may not look like much from the outside, but trust me, once you experience the explosion of flavors within, you'll understand why I can't get enough of this hidden gem!

This review is based on the new location for the restaurant. The old location used to be probably my favourite dim sum spot downtown and one of the better quality spots. Sadly since they moved it has definitely gone downhill. The first thing I’ll say is that the decor on the walls of the new location is much nicer than previously. It looks more upscale than before and less like a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. But that’s basically where the improvements end. The chairs are actually cheaper and made of plastic as opposed to their old metal chairs. Sadly it also seems that the food quality has definitely gone down. Are used to really enjoy the location and it was slightly more expensive than most other dim sum places but the food was way better so it was worth it. Now it seems the prices have gone up and most of their dim sum dishes cost between seven and eight dollars. But their quality has gone down and the size and cautions up their food have also gone down. The food is pretty bland without much flavor. The portion sizes are quite small. I’ve posted two pictures, one of their deep fried squid tentacles and one of their baby beef. Both dishes were eight dollars and you can see pretty tiny portions compared to most dim sum places. The hot sauce taste more sweet and spicy and you can tell they are definitely not using the typical hot sauce. The service was slow and not great. Worst of all even though they don’t tell you at the start they charge you an automatic 15% gratuity on every bill no matter how many people. Whether it’s two or eight people there is an automatic gratuity on the bill. All in all it is definitely worse than it used to be and I likely won’t be returning. Ironically the gratuity they charge is 15% which is less than most restaurants and probably less than I would’ve normally tipped but I don’t like being forced to tip automatically on the bill. Also if you are not paying attention you will likely double tip even though it is written on the bill that they do charge gratuity automatically but it is not written on the menu or anywhere else. They also only take cash and Visa but no MasterCard which is a little unusual. There are definitely better dim sum restaurants in Toronto especially if you go into suburbs but now even downtown in Chinatown like dim sum king

Overrated... The restaurant itself is nice and clean, and the dim sum foods were decent, but the service wasn't great nor the surprise charges on the bill (i.e., charging 15% tip regardless of the group size, bringing tea upon arrival and then charging for it per person). They are pricier than some of the other dim sum places I've been to in Toronto, and not the best. It seems clear to me that they were aiming for the tourists who are unfamiliar with Canadian customs.. Upon seated, the server brought out tea without even asking whether we wanted it or not, but then later I found out from the dim sum order form that they charge $1.50/person for tea. What a scam and how unpleasant to find out that you are served tea and they charge you for it. One of the servers was rude and unpleasant as well. When we asked for an extra spoon for the wonton soup (they brought out only one spoon for the table of two. Why??), the server brought two large serving spoons to the table and didn't even apologize that she brought the wrong ones. And she'd loudly place the plates and cups. Hopefully she was just having a bad day. Upon payment, the server informed me that the 15% gratuity was already added to my bill (for the party of two people?) and that they only accepted Visa, debit or cash... Wtf. Thankfully I had cash but no visa nor debit. That should've been clearly noted at the entrance. Anyways, overall, I won't be going back to this place again even though it was newly renovated. Left a bad taste in my mouth after such experience. Also, why no change table in the bathroom when there's space??

My partner and I eat a fair bit of dim sum and I have to say the low reviews of this space have me a little shocked. We finally got down to the new location on a holiday Monday and frankly we expected bad things given the nature of the so many poor reviews. We can confidently say that the reviews are not accurate. The food was extremely well portioned, very fresh and tasty. It’s probably under priced for how much of each item and the quality. The service was speedy and efficient. The decor updated and clean. The staff quite friendly and helpful. What seems to be the issue is people saying the tea isn’t free - it hasn’t been at most dim sum spots for years and they also tell you it’s not free, it’s clearly stated on the menu. The second major complaint was the automatic added tip. We understand why they did this. There is a lot of people working here and dim sum is fairly cheap. They do this to ensure that it’s fair because all the staff are serving everyone all the time we had food on our table less than 13 minutes after we sat down. They serve food hot and fresh and bodies need to deliver that food. This is a sit down service restaurant with fast service, the tip is warranted. If you don’t want to tip, get takeout. Overall this reviews are ridiculous and you should come here. It’s the best dim sum we have had in a long time. They offer an extensive take out menu and Uber eats menu. The food was the best dim sum in the area and five items were more than enough for two people.

We have ordered delivery of dinner and dined in on numerous occasions for dim sum. Presently Rol San is operating in half the intended space as renovations are continuing in the building next door. Happy that the current small dining room is available, but does make peak dining hours a challenge. The line-up out the door can become chaotic if the staff do not keep patrons orderly. When staff are not paying attention, there remains some patrons who linger at tables during peak hours. Highly recommend the dim sum, everything was top notch in flavours. The shu mei are huge and topped with roe, the rice rolls were perfectly steamed and incredibly tasty with the sweet soya sauce, the rice in lotus leaf had great texture and was very filling. Noted soup dumplings are dumplings in a soup broth, we thought we ordered dumplings filled with soup. Nevertheless the soup dumplings arrived filled with vegetables and meat and were super delicious. The fried shrimp wontons were huge and so crispy. NOTE the 15% automatic tip added to the bill, as well there is a charge for tea. Service is ok once you get past the line up. Will be returning for dim sum again for sure, as for the dinner delivery we had, it was not the level of taste we anticipated, but will order delivery again before further comment. There is a close Green P parking lot around the corner in Kensington market.
