I decided to reward myself for completing my first day back at MMA after a long time off. As I walked spadina I window shopped the nearby Chinese restaurant menus, I'm hunting one dish today: Hot and Sour Soup.
I see the picture appears to be the style of Hot and Sour I prefer, and the price is alright.
I enter the restaurant, within five seconds a waitress notices me and greets me, ask for how many, and politely guides me to my table. She's smiling, and it's genuine, and she's not the only server with a good attitude, very friendly and respectful bunch of girls. I ask to see the difference in size between a medium and a large, she brings me the bowls to show me the size and confirms my order.
First, I'm brought a complimentary pot of green tea, I am a tea man, I do love green tea, and it's a delicious brew.
The Hot and Sour Soup arrives at my table, I couldn't be more pleased. The server is polite, and doesn't disturb my meal, but still makes sure I'm well accommodated, The soup is phenomenal, ranks with my top 3 Hot and Sour Soups in the city. Perfect temperature when it's brought out, perfect spice level, and my preferred thickness/texture. As I'm finishing my bowl, another waitress is nearby, I ask her for the bill, she's in a great mood too, and pretty as well, made my experience all the better. She brings me my bill, and I leave a tip, it's well deserved, wish I had more to tip, truly.
On my way out, the server who brought me my bill wishes me the strength to keep pushing in my life, I'm not sure how she could tell I was going through difficult times, but she hit the nail on the head. You have no idea how much it meant to me in that moment, this restaurant should be proud to employ the fine women who make the atmosphere so friendly and welcoming. Beyond that it's a very kid friendly place, literally books and toys for them on a small shelf on the wall, doesn't get in the way of anything, just available for them.
I will be back, and I will be getting an extra large Hot and Sour Soup next time. Not the cheapest place, but not the most expensive I'd put it at $15-50 per person depending on how much you order,...
Read moreNew Sky Garden restaurant by Spadina and College is a local staple, established in Chinatown for decades. This review is based on a recent delivery order so no comments are made for in-person environment or customer service.
I ordered a selection of dishes:
Beef sauteed with ginger and green onions Crispy beef with sesame - by far our favorite. The beef is coated and fried with a slight hint of sweetness, topped with sesame seeds. 4/5 Noodles with chicken and vegetables - this is a little different from the usual fried noodle dish. The noodles didn't seem as crispy or fried as I'm used to which was okay for us because it seemed less oily and not as salty. It suited my palate but I can see it as possibly offputting for others who may be more familiar with the more fried version. 4/5 Grouper and tofu - a favorite in our home. No fuss, plenty of fish and tofu, not too oily or salty, easy to eat and quite comforting. 4/5 Chinese bok choy with garlic - again a simpler dish but so easy to eat with a nice hit or garlic 4/5 Steamed Chinese chicken dish with dates and goji berries - I would say this has great authentic taste, rich and very flavorful. The only downfall is that you dont get a lot of meat and have to pick through it because it is bone in chicken with pieces oddly chopped. 4/5
Ha gow/shrimp dumplings - an easy staple with plenty of shrimp. No complaints overall. Tastes as expected. 4/5
Would I give New Sky Garden another try? I would actually because I'd like to try a few more dishes to get a more well rounded experience. I was eating with others so had to order with their palates in mind. Portions were decent for the price paid. Overall, a...
Read moreHow many times have I been here? Maybe once or twice a year. Maybe 10-15 times since 2009. I always come here with Thai people, my family, friends and coworkers. It seems like a food spot for Thai people.
FOOD (3 stars) They have many kinds of seafood such as lobster, crab, fish, clam, oyster, and scallop. I try to avoid having Chinese food because I usually eat Thai food 4-5 days a week already. Their food is quite similar, and many dishes are oily. However, many dishes are difficult to deny. We often order the same dishes almost every time. They were Live Lobsters in different kind of sauces, Fried rice with Crabs, Cold Chicken with Jelly Fish, Steamed Live Seabass, Snow Pea Leaves with King Mushrooms, etc. However, we also tried new items this time too. We had razor clams in Black Bean Sauce, Stuff Crab Claw and Sautéed Jumbo Shrimp with Szechuan Sauce. My today favorite was Cold Chicken!
AMBIANCE (3 stars) They have many round tables. Each table is good for ten people. The restaurant could seat at least 100 people in their dining room. The best thing is they close very late on Sunday to Thursday at 2 am. and open until 5 am in the morning on Friday and Saturday. That is kind of cool for a night owl~
SERVICE (3.5 stars) It is hard to expect excellent service in China town. However, they were friendly and attentive.
