The short version: The best roti place in the GTA has returned. The force is strong with this one. Highest recommendations of all my restaurant reviews. This is the diamond in the rough that you will want to discover. If anything, I think the dishes have improved.
The long version: I've been going to Roti Mahal's predecessor restaurant, Gandhi Cuisine, for over 20 years very regularly. To find out the staff has revived the restaurant was music to my ears. I've always told everyone: this is the best butter chicken curry in the city. Let alone best butter chicken roti.
So I was strategic and systematic about trying roti's and dishes in two multiple entree orders in 1 week: 5 roti, one curry on rice, and 1 new biryani. Between the orders varying from meat to vegan, I was able to sample and taste the Madras curry, the cream rose base of the butter chicken, the spinach curry, and the new chicken biryani.
I can say with confidence that all the curries taste the same kind of amazing. For the rice dishes, I like the improvement of separating curry from the rice into two take-out packages so the curry doesn't dry out.
Spicy levels are the same: so if you order "hot" this is not Frank's-Red-Hot-Sauce hot ... this is authentic East Indian spicy level. Only order "hot" spicy level if you love Habanero or Ghost Pepper hot sauces.
The new chicken biryani is spot on. Such a great addition to the menu. Super delicious, probably right up there as one of the best I've had in the city. I'll now need to do more research to see how the biryani compares to other restaurants as my new COVID-19 takeout challenge.
Gandhi Cuisine's roti's live in on in Roti Mahal with some fresh new thinking on how to make them even better. I'd give this 6* rating out of 5* but I can't find the button...
Read moreI visited this place and found that they have a designated Vegan menu. Prices were decent and so were portion sizes. I ordered almost all the Roti dishes on their vegan menu. You can choose the level of spice here, which is great. I also bought their samosas.
The fillings in the Roti dishes were definitely flavourful. Lots of powerful spices; almost a bit too much for my liking. But if you enjoy strong Indian flavours (such as the Chettinad style), then this place is worth a visit. The taste of each Roti dish (potato, chickpeas, eggplant, etc.) were very similar to one another. Out of all the Vegan options from Roti Mahal, surprisingly, the cauliflower curry beat the other classic fillings, and was my favorite.
The samosas were also tasty, however, the outer pastry had split open, so too much oil got through when deep frying it. The filling was totally drenched in oil. This can happen when the pastry wrap is not cinched up fully, and especially, when such samosas are refried for customers.
The older gentleman at the counter was very friendly. And because I had bought so many Vegan dishes, he threw in (for free) one of their only desserts that didn't use ghee. It was a yellow coloured, Semolina pudding made in-house, and it turned out to...
Read moreThe man at the front counter was super friendly and nice as soon as we walked in. I ordered the vegan cauliflower and potato roti, and my partner ordered the vegetarian chana roti. It took about 10-15 minutes to prepare. He brought it to our table with a jug of water, and even gave us a complimentary vegan dessert on the house!
I enjoyed my cauliflower roti. It was steaming hot, a generous portion size, and had great curry flavor.
I got medium spicy and didn't notice it at first but halfway through my dish, the spice started to build. It was never too spicy for my taste though! Perfectly tolerable. My partner got the hot level and it was noticeably spicy from the first bite, but he also found it tolerable.
I also tried the mango pickle. Very strong tangy flavor. Not my preference but if you're into bright, tangy sauces, it packs a punch.
We walked in around 5:30pm on a Saturday night and were able to eat inside the restaurant. The table next to us has a "Reserved" sign on it so I guess you can reserve tables. By 6:15pm when we left, it was much busier than when we first arrived.
Highly recommend this roti shop! The friendly service alone is worth...
