Sunset Grill - if you want a decent, good breakfast with a throwback, cozy environment, then this is where you want to go. Located steps away from Coxwell subway station, this Sunset Grill is a local favourite spot.
Like many similar places, Sunset Grill serves your standard breakfast fare. You get your eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee, choice of bread - you get the idea. What we go to Sunset Grill for though, are their home fries. These home fries are not the kind that come pre-made in a bag from your freezer. NOPE. These home fries come from real potatoes, cut, and done right on the stove. Bite into them and you can taste actual potato with that chew. I've been to a few other breakfast restaurants where the home fries taste more like that powdery stuff that comes out of the freezer - not my fave so Sunset Grill is the way to go for me.
There are lots of different breakfast combinations to choose from. Show up before 10am and they even have morning specials so if you're an early bird, give that a go as well.
Now, a few more comments about the food that we had. Overall, taste is what you'd expect - a good hearty breakfast. If you ask for over easy eggs, they will come to you over easy. Scrambled is scrambled. The breakfast sausages taste good - what you'd expect. Perhaps the only thing to mention is that the bacon is on the saltier side but definitely crispy. Bread - you get your choice of white, brown, or rye. Featured in the images is the brown bread.
The restaurant itself is actually bigger than you'd think given the storefront. There are 2 levels and plenty of seating. At the time I went, customers could choose where they wanted to sit.
Before ending this off, I have to give a shout out to the staff that work at this Sunset Grill. I've been a few times now and seen the same faces and they are a lovely bunch. Smiles for all the customers and you can tell they know who the regulars are.
I have to say, I appreciate the atmosphere of this Sunset Grill. It's just easy, it's chill, and there's a bit of a throwback to times now past which I find nostalgic and homey. It may not be the most modern joint in the area but I appreciate its charm with good people and good food. They also serve omelettes and burgers which I plan to try next time I go. Give it a go if you're...
Read moreI don't normally give reviews, but I felt absolutely compelled to after my awful experience. The food was okay for me, but what really ruined my experience was the terrible service!
The first thing that tickled my nerves was the fact the server had dropped my toast ON ME when placing it on my table. This would've been fine, except she had not taken any ownership for the mistake and had instead cheerily walked away to get us another slice of toast.
Second, the server had initially promised to give my group separate bills, but later when it came time for paying, she was absolutely reluctant to charge us twice even though two bills had already been created! We had to pay all-together in the end.
Third, we had to go to the same server FOUR separate times to request for 1) a take-out container, 2) a bag for the take-out container (which she had only handed us one when we required two), 3) a take-out cup for my unfinished drink, and 4) a lid to go with the cup. It's not rocket science to imagine that if someone requested a take-out that they would also require a bag to go with it (especially when it was hailing rain outside), or that if they needed to take-out a drink, they would require a lid.
And finally, normally I would be fine with being left alone during my meal, but there’s just something really unprofessional with the restaurant staff huddled together at the back of the restaurant chatting away while customers needed help. Our server was completely oblivious to us when it came time for paying the bill or when we required assistance for our take-out. We approached her each time, and she was dragging her feet every second of it.
This was absolutely not the experience that I had imagined, especially for a restaurant that has had years of experience in the business and the various amounts of good reviews it has received. I don't blame the restaurant, but they definitely need to train/hire...
Read moreThe food usually ranges from mediocre to okay, but the service is always terrible, the servers are wildly grumpy and abrasive, the air temperature is consistently very, very hot and the sound of dishes in the kitchen is comically loud, completely preventing any type of reasonable conversation. Last time I was here, I asked (before we had even ordered) if we could move to a table away from the kitchen. You know, on account of the immediately obvious inferno-like heat and the deafening noise that was clearly about to ruin one of the rare visits with my 87 year old grandmother. There were tons of tables free, but the waitress told me they weren't in "her section" so no, we couldn't move.
Absolute rock-bottom. I would avoid it completely, but there aren't really any alternatives in the area. I always eventually decide that my memory must be exaggerating how bad it was last time, but they always really go out of their way to assure me that is...
