I almost want to gatekeep this place because it love it so much, but I want them to thrive!

We usually get take out from here when I used to live on the street next to it, went back to Toronto last night and was craving sushi. Had to come here and revisit old stomping grounds! When I lived close by, it was the only sushi I’d eat in Toronto.

They did move a minute walk away, I was almost sad and I saw their old location and it was shut down. But when I looked on Google maps, it showed a different address. We found the new location and were ecstatic!

I can’t believe we missed out on every time we did takeout.

It’s a very cozy atmosphere, the ambiance and service was great. We received a warm hand towel each to wipe our hands at the beginning of the meal, it was really nice. Not a lot of small restos do that practice, but very appreciative that they do.

We had the assorted sashimi (22 pieces and came w miso soup and house salad), Crazy Girl, Leslieville, Michael Jackson, tempura and I think a California roll (? Not sure, my friends had ordered their own roll).

My favourite had always been the Crazy Girl, it’s a deep fried roll with cream cheese and smoked salmon! Almost like a Philadelphia roll - but on steroids. I’ve been ordering this roll since 2021!

Oh, and the sashimi? It was fresh and were generous FAT slices. They weren’t trying to cheap you out at all, it was high quality fish, and it tasted fresh.

The presentation in the food was amazing, they are slightly on the pricier side for their specialty rolls but I PROMISE, it’s honestly worth it. They’re big rolls and guaranteed 2-3 rolls is more than enough for 2 people. They have enough protein to satiate your appetite in their rolls.

I’ve never seen their plating until today and I was blown away, the chefs really do take care of the food they make. I wasn’t expecting that from them, I was so used to the their takeout boxes. A must visit for me any time I go back into the city for sure- no more takeout!

The server was extremely friendly, we got there pretty late, so the menus switched. She explained thoroughly. She was such a sweetheart. She was the only server on a Saturday night, the resto wasn’t full but she made sure to take care of all her tables and had everything they needed.

I’m so happy this...

EDIT: since there is no way to respond to the response of the owner I will write my response here. The owner is a liar. I did not say all 3 rolls were wrong, I said 1 of the rolls was wrong. I showed the photo to the staff so they could see my order did not match the receipt (the receipt that I kept and brought to the store because when I previously called the owner he said to do that). The owner says below that he tried to make it right by offering me a free roll, they did not offer me anything except insults about how I’m a terrible person lol. I never insisted 3 rolls should be free, I only ever asked for 1 because that’s what he previously offered to me. Again, I only did what he previously told me to, he was just going back on his word. When I spoke to the owner today he said “why don’t you leave a Google review, let’s see what that will do.” And so here I am. The yaki udon we ordered separately came to our table and we left without eating it because the owner told me to get out of his store. I tried to return the dish to the staff but the plate was hot and so I dropped it and it broke. Do not worry, I am never returning here again.

I was a long-time loyal customer of Toto. For years I have been ordering from here and have had great experiences. The previous time I ordered takeout, I picked up the order and realized when I got home that my order was wrong. The quality of the sushi was also terrible, just look at the photos. I called the restaurant and the owner OFFERED a free roll for me the next time I visit. Today, I visited and told them about this. The employee was very kind and tried to help. She called the owner and I spoke to him on the phone. The owner said I was a horrible person for demanding free food, he asked what kind of person does this, and that I should be ashamed of myself. He was the one that previously offered me this, why make empty offers you’re not willing to keep? The owner said my previous order was in January and I should be ashamed of myself for coming back months later. It’s not like when he made the offer he stated a time limit. I am very disappointed with my experience. You have just lost a loyal customer and YOU should be ashamed by the way you speak...

thoroughly enjoyed the sushi here and will def be going back to try other things!

even my partner who usually rates things as, “not bad,” as soon as he had his first bite said, “this is pretty good!” haha

i appreciated the little crunchy chip with the tray we ordered (or crispy wonton?) - u can enjoy it as an amuse-bouche or crush it up and use as a topping to make smtng into a crunchy roll haha i’m always seeing cooking shows talk about texture so i thought maybe this was their way of doing it.. or dont eat it, whatever!

the portions are very generous and not just rice- i know some places add so much rice onto their maki but this was not the case (wish i took some pics).

added a last min yam roll to my order and i was so happy! it reminded me of a place that closed and i have been yearning for it, this place reminds me of it :) u would think i could get a good yam roll from anywhere but maybe because it’s so simple, places dont bother putting in any effort.

i also liked what they do with the imitation crab meat in their rolls (like for cali rolls) - instead of just throwing it into a roll, as is, they mix it up (with a bit of mayo?), i just found it to be diff than other places that just use it as the sticks.

as a takeout order, they provided wasabi and ginger outside of the tray which is thoughtful bc sometimes, in the tray, it can get onto things and not everyone is ok with those flavours.

since the wasabi is in a separate container, u can just give it a mix if it’s become a bit “loose” - not unique experience to this resto for me, it happens.

i would have been ok with a little less sauce on some rolls but that’s just my personal preference and can request it next time.

i think some people who write reviews maybe just look for problems. i was very happy with the food and would be glad to reco it to friends for a try!

congrats on new location, looking...

Really mixed review. Delivery was on time (we'd paid extra for priority on UberEats) and the order was fully correct, with *one* bonus fortune cookie. It's hard to go wrong with Yam Tempura (yum). The miso soup was... miso soup. Ditto the cucumber sushi, though I was really impressed with the much healthier brown and purple rice options. Portions were fair, though the center thirds of each of my rolls was squished tiny to fit in the container. They fell apart when freed from their little plastic jail. Typical north american "wasabi", but it did have nice sinus clearing heat. My partner liked his Maguro. On the other hand, we were both put off by the unrealistic food coloring on the seaweed salad, normally a favorite for us both. He wouldn't eat it. I didn't mind the taste but figured it was mostly coloring, corn syrup and MSG, like the commercial tubs. The funny part was the free container of... what? With a sticker asking for reviews, it gave no indication whatsoever of the contents. With me being vegetarian and his food allergies, that was a hard pass. Neither of us wanted to play "Japanese Roulette" but it DID result in this review. It wasn't a terrible dinner and it's awesome that they're open hours after our other choices had closed. Still, I won't be suggesting it anytime again soon.
