I've visited the cafe on Sunday during lunch time, it was very busy - many families with children - it is a kid friendly place, but also regular independent coffee shop crowd: people sipping their coffee while reading or working on their laptops. delicious coffee as always (and yes, there is regular 10% coffee cream available now), plus cookies, pastries and sandwiches. The place is fully licensed, so you can get beer or something stronger there as well! A beautifully decorated interior - there is also another room in the back with more tables, if you're looking for a quieter spot. if you find a moment check out the graffiti on the east and south walls of the building - (they are from the times when the cafe was called Flying Pony) - super cute and very instagramable.
My previous review from early months of 2022. it is so nice to see this place reopened. This used to be cafe and art gallery named Flying Pony, I am curious whether the partially changed name indicates totally new ownership/management, or just means new beginnings for the established business that closed during the Covid lockdown? coffee is good, so are the Christmas cookies that I had tried. the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming, five stars for that, they seem to be really nice and genuine in their attitude toward all guests, it is something that one doesn't encounter very often these days... my only wish is that the place offered self-served sugar/milk/cream stand, as so many other cafes already do. for shy people it is a bit of a challenge to ask the barista for additional sugars and cream - not to mention that they use 5% coffee cream instead of the usual 10%. it is wonderful to see this place reopened after such a long time, and back in the neighbourhood. lots of seating place - a treat for bigger groups - a semi private room with a communal table at the back, perfect for...
Read moreThis is a great spot for excellent morning pastries and coffee. The serving staff is quite professional and friendly. I did encounter one poor experience with a food choice in the early evening. I ordered the Caesar salad with added Chicken breast, assuming the piece of chicken would be grilled… My mistake. It came pounded flat like veal scallopini, breaded and deep-fried. It was so dry I asked my wonderful server for a few lemon wedges, which helped somewhat. Before leaving I poked my head into the kitchen, and politely asked the man there if I could have requested the chicken to be grilled or sautéed to retain the flavour and moistness better. His reply was “No, we get so many different plates ordered that I can’t (meaning won’t) cook anything differently than planned.” I did not respond. Admittedly, I should have spoken only to the Manager on duty, but still I found the cook’s explanation unacceptable. I will continue to stop by the Black Pony, but I will definitely be more careful in...
Read moreGreat drinks, quality food, fantastic staff, for a taste of what a truly great cosmopolitan Toronto café atmosphere can be, don't miss this gem. Perfect for everything from a quick snack and coffee to regular lunch destination, first date location, or favorite place to celebrate, The Black Pony is an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. This place will become your new go to. The staff are the kind of rare folks who really care about their customers and consider their job a craft. If you become even an occasional visitor, they'll get to know you. They say: "Here we imagine each client as family," and I'm telling you they mean it. I've known the staff from other great bars; now they have a better location, they're open longer, and they have great, locally sourced, delicious food on top of a drinks menu honed to perfection through many years. I can't say enough good things about this place. Come here, you...
