This is what happened today:
I stepped into this cute little place, after saying hello and smiling at the server, i politely asked if they accept amex, and he said yes, please take a seat.
so far so good.
after sitting, i overheard the conversation between that server and a patron about the fee american express charges merchants. The server mentioned something and i paraphrase: "amex charges something like 20-30% and gave card users discounts to use their cards to spend in restaurants."
This is the problem. I am just a card user, while amex is the one that is costing the merchant more, not me. But this conversation has implied that i am the one who chose to be the bad guy to use amex and take the discount and cost the restaurant more. I didnt argue or respond, i left immediately.
Look, im not a snowflake, and i dont get offended by what people say to me. But this is poor judgement on the customer service side. The lounge is not big, everybody could hear everybody saying everything. Am i gonna be comfortable knowing someone implying that im the bad guy here purposely choosing to use amex just so i get a discount from amex at the expense of the merchant? Perhaps his full intention is to explain to that patron why someone would come up and ask if they accept amex. He could have just said "because many places dont accept amex" and that would have been the end of story.
Also amex does not charge 20-30%, pls google right now and type "how much amex charge merchant", and u see the...
Read moreBig shoutout to Gringo on Davie St.! This spot knows how to treat their guests right. We were even rolling with a wheelchair user, and they were super accommodating. Kudos for that!
Let's talk grub – the Kunu burritos were a flavor bomb. Seriously rich, with a zesty kick that took it over the top. And that Wilbur burrito? Smoked pork perfection that had us in food heaven.
We dove into tacos – Encino, Wilbur, Kunu – and they were like a fiesta in our mouths. Now, hold onto your sombreros, because their Margarita game is strong. They've got tequila selections to please everyone, from the basics to top-tier choices.
Oh, and the apps – Chippy Dippy and Guacamole were our munch-worthy warm-up. Now, here's the thing: we were so into the food that we totally forgot to snap pics. Yup, it was that good.
Staff? Super friendly. Oh, and this place radiates LGBTQ+ friendliness, which is major in our book. Gringo on Davie St. is more than just a restaurant – it's a vibe, a flavor explosion, and a welcoming spot for all.
Don't miss out...
Read moreThe menu is slightly different, they do fish tacos at this location in addition to the rest of the menu that both locations share. Do note that the fish is only available in the tacos, no other dishes are available. I wanted to try a bowl wish fish and rice and that they couldn’t or wouldn’t do. A side of rice was not a good second-best. You need to choose…if you want fish, it’s coming in a taco or not at all.
The decor and furnishings are similar as well, but Davie doesn’t have the upper bench that Gastown does for seating. My lady and I count that a benefit.
The view is much better, as are the people-watching opportunities at Davie. Gastown is on a Back alley (street name in fact is Blood Alley) that’s currently under construction so not much to look at. One day it’ll be more interesting.
The people that work at Davie are more colourful…our server told us their name and pronouns when they took order. I’m an old trucker and mis-spoke several times, but they...
