We came for a birthday celebration on a Saturday. Service was mediocre and food was a little bit of a let down
Drinks: Most of their drinks are prebatched so are harder to customize. They are infused ahead of time to give it more flavour
Noisette Manhattan (23) - a good solid drink. If you like strong drinks this is a good one. The brown butter whisky makes this drink delicious
Genmaicha clover club (18) - loved the faint genmaicha flavour at the end
Blue fizz (19) - good for people who don't love the flavour of alcohol. On the sweeter side
Verdita Colada (22) - like the creaminess of this drink with the contrast of the chilli oil
Burnt Gibson (mini) (10) - a bit too strong and dry for me
Onto the food...
Crab dip (28) - I liked the spiced Madeleines in this dish. Gave it a little punch. The crab wasnt too seafoody and contrasted well with the avocado. Reminded me a little of a deconstructed California roll
Beef tartare (22) - the potato chips had a hint of old oil flavour but it didn't influence the dish too much. They were nice and crispy. Good amount of tartare to chips. I think there was a bit too much pickle to the amount of beef. Would be better if we were instructed to mix the tartare beforehand so that you aren't getting huge amounts of sourness in some mouthfuls. Felt like the peppered egg yolk didn't add much to this dish
Frog legs (16) (usually comes with 3) - they reminded me a lot of yangnyeom Korean fried chicken which is like a sweet and spicy flavour. The frog legs were juicy. I feel like the lime mignonette was a bit much. A bit overly sweet for me
Pasta for Rachel (36) - was a disappointment. I think we were most hyped for this dish. To our disappointment this dish didn't exceed expectations. The pasta (especially the side pieces) was dry. It tasted EXACTLY like a PEROGI. The beirre d'isigny was very faint. Almost nonexistent. We were advised that it probably melted before it got to the table. Our server explained that some people want extra on theirs which is why other tables get the table service. I note that this isn't explained on the menu (but it is on their Instagram - I guess social media does run the world now). TIP. Ask for EXTRA butter for your pasta and you will get tableside butter service. Without the extra butter the whole dish was just dry and we were forced to scrap up whatever sauce we could find on it to add that extra flavour (if you compare other photos with mine, the amount of sauce will look very inconsistent in each which definitely impacts the flavour profile)
Halibut (40) - one of the better dishes on the night. Very soft and perfectly cooked. Loved the delicate sauce
Special of the day asparagus salad (22) - this was one of the specials of the day. Quail egg was well cooked. I hated the size of the asparagus (chopped into tiny pieces) and the sauce coating the asparagus totally masked the flavour of it. Dish was refreshing but shouldn't be marketed as an asparagus dish. It also looks like a side salad when compared to the rest of the dishes. Maybe should have been served with the initial dishes instead
NY steak with fries (65) - fries were crispy and delicious. The steak was also tender and well cooked
Overall I felt like the service here was mediocre. The explanation for some of the dishes were lacking. The overall noise of the restaurant was also on the louder side so if you are looking for a quiet place this is not it. They also have some larger tables which is good. The food was okay but nothing that I would come back for. The birthday girl at the table had been to the restaurant before and commented that the dishes were inconsistent with the quality received on the initial visit which prompts me to believe that food can be inconsistent. Maybe your visit will be better than ours. I did enjoy some of their drinks so I would come back to try those.
And again. Reminder to order the extra butter IF you are...
Read moreThis is a complicated review to write. How could so many elements add up to such a poor experience? How could they spend this much money and fail so miserably?
First off the amount of 5 star reviews are an indication of making the scene culture. Without the horrible sound management and trying too hard seriousness of the design, it is at best a 4 star restaurant. To be real there are very few 5 star restaurants in North America. Many places have a 5 star element but the weird desire to get to a spot first and leave a 5 star review is strange. I feel many Vancouver "foodies" would leave a 5 star review for a can of cat food if it meant they were there early. A sort of "I WAS HERE" vibe.
Room is so loud! It feels like a honkeytonk in texas during a wet t-shirt contest. Why are we yelling at the servers....? Sound mangement should have been a consideration. (a friend went a couple nights before and warned us. She said she only noticed there was a DJ spinning when she walked past them on the way to the bathroom. We were warned but had reservations and thought she was exaggerating. She wasn't)
The food was delightfull. If I feel inclined to circle back around I will elaborate. The horrible sound left us with a miserable experience. I will say that if there is anything you like at Published it's probably because of the chef here. We wasted the food by rushing through the meal. Which was a disservice to the chef and the team. Our apologies to them I am for this review. You did no wrong, the design team and owners certainly did.
Staff are all excellent and some of my favorites in Vancouver work here. To name one! Satoshi from Grapes and Soda. If it was possible to actually talk to him we would be there 3 times a week to sit at the bar. With the sound It's like getting a headache before the hangover! Afterword my partner said he felt like he needed to drink honey lemon tea so he didn't lose his voice the next day!
4.One of the group had enough and went home with her partner, we thought we would try and redeem the night by going to the "listening" lounge downstairs. LaLa. Well that was an even bigger mistake. "Listening bar" implies actual sound quality. There are some thrift store speakers put beside the bar that aren't even hooked up! They use 2 sets of ridiculous little speakers that face each other in the room. FACE EACH OTHER. WTF. The thing we could hear the most was the bartenders shaker. So you know that is working at least. Sound was muddy and all that we heard was sloppy low end.
Listening bar it is not. Shame on them for even claiming it is. The restaurant portion missed the mark due to lack of sophistication across the board. The listening portion should have been straight forward and an easy thing to execute to create an aural treat. It sure wasn't. Can't really tell you how good the DJ Was...would love to comment on his efforts but my ears had given up trying to decipher anything.
Overall waste of a night and money. Form over substance. Design is overdone and too serious. Kitchen and bar staff are basically wasted in a space where customers can't lean into an evening of being transported on a journey of gustatory delights. It feels like it's trying so so hard to be "seen" they miss the point that people pay money for the experience, I get no nourishment from a...
Read moreTonight was our first time dining at June on Cambie, and after hearing so many great reviews from friends, it absolutely lived up to expectations—and then some. Although we originally had a reservation for two, we arrived with a party of three. The host kindly accommodated the change, which we really appreciated. From the moment we walked in, the staff were warm, welcoming, and professional. The restaurant has a very cozy and intimate feel, with a clean, modern design and relaxed yet upscale ambiance. Parking was easy, the seating is comfortable and well spaced, lighting was perfect, and the washrooms were clean and spacious. The service truly stood out—it was attentive, seamless, and very well coordinated. We noticed our plates and cutlery were refreshed multiple times, especially after dishes with sauces, which kept the experience tidy and comfortable. Even the steak knife they provided was sharper and of better quality than what we’ve had at some steakhouses recently. One thing that really impressed us was the teamwork—every time a plate was cleared or a new dish delivered, it was by a different staff member. It felt like the whole team was working in sync, and everyone was neatly groomed and professional, adding to the overall polished experience. Here’s what we ordered: Prawn Cocktail (highlight of the night): A surprising standout. Unlike the typical prawn cocktail from a seafood bar, this one featured large, incredibly fresh tiger prawns with a clean, crisp bite. Easily better than versions we've had at high-end seafood restaurants. Scallop (served in-shell): Beautifully seared with a light crust and tender center. The citrus beurre blanc added a fresh brightness. Nicely presented and well-balanced. Mussels with Mini Frites: Very fresh, tender, and velvety. The mini frites added a fun textural contrast. Another well-executed and attractive dish. Rachel Pasta: Rich, buttery, and balanced with mild Comté cheese. Cooked perfectly al dente and beautifully plated. Great for sharing. Striploin with Fries: Excellent quality cut with great marbling and flavor. The fries were perfectly crisp and not greasy. Very satisfying. Chocolate Cake: A smooth chocolate mousse with a crispy hazelnut base—reminiscent of a Ferrero Rocher. While well-made, I personally found it on the lighter side. As a dark chocolate lover, I’d prefer something a bit more intense next time. We also really appreciated the presentation of every dish—they looked as good as they tasted. There’s clear attention to visual detail without being overdone. Overall: June on Cambie delivered an elevated dining experience in a cozy, stylish setting. From the food quality and presentation to the refined service and teamwork, everything was done thoughtfully and with care. The prawn cocktail was the highlight of the night, but everything else was right up there. We’ll definitely be back—and recommending...
