I usually avoid ramen, but I make an exception for Santouka..
We decided to try this new place because my partner likes ramen, but it turned out to be the worst ramen experience we’ve had. My partner ordered the original pork ramen, which was excessively salty, while I tried the golden sesame, expecting a nice balance of white sesame and chili oil. Instead, it was overwhelmingly salty with a heavy dose of sambal oelek.
The “Tokyo fries” were just standard fries topped with nori and bonito but they were fried properly at least.. however at the bottom they’re were mostly broken pieces
The gyozas were poorly cooked, mushy on the inside and showing uneven white spots due to improper preparation. It was served with this tangy sauce which I didn’t think suited gyozas (I like mine with ponzu)
We spent about $57 for our meal (including a pop- before tip) around 4 PM. Despite the restaurant having only two patrons and a 2-3 servers and 2-3 chefs, the service was nearly non-existent. They didn’t provide extra share plates, (as they gave the gyozas and fries first) failed to quality check on our food, and didn’t clear our empty plates, even when my partner pushed them aside. It seemed like the servers only cleared dishes once EVERY item was finished
To make matters worse, there were fruit flies buzzing around non stop while we tried to eat, which was surprising for a newly renovated place that has only been open for about six months.. and I could faintly smell that they used a dirty rag to wipe the tables.
Even at the end she didn’t ask us how the food was just gave us the machine and walked away to do nothing lol (I get it if it’s busy and u need to do something else but it wasn’t)
Overall, this was a disappointing experience would never...
Read moreOnce in a blue moon, I try to support the local restaurant and toss a few bucks their way. Today, ramen seemed like a good idea.
I spotted a discount code on SkipTheDishes.... perfect chance to give this spot a try, even though everything already looked a bit pricey. I did my homework, saw a bunch of solid reviews online, and thought why not. Pulled the trigger on chilled tsukemen, chicken karaage, and 2 cheesecakes.
First impression? Comedy show. I opened the cheesecake box...seven bucks a pop for something smaller than a golf ball. Okay, fine, it’s a ramen shop, not a bakery—don’t nitpick. Next, the karaage: three lonely little pieces for $10.99. At this point, I laughed and reminded myself I’d just dropped nearly $50 for ramen, a snack, and two “micro” desserts.
Alright, maybe the star of the show would redeem it. Their chilled tsukemen: $22.99. The noodles came clumped together, ice-cold bricks, so I had to heat them up just to separate them. Then came the struggle of twirling spaghetti-like noodles with chopsticks, trying not to redecorate my walls with soy sauce splashes.
Finally, the taste test. First bite—bam—straight salt bomb. The dipping sauce was basically soy sauce with attitude. No wasabi kick, no daikon brightness, scallions barely there. Just plain noodles, two thin slices of chashu. That’s it.
At the end of it all, I sat there thinking: this isn’t fine dining, this isn’t even comfort food. This was the most ridiculous “ $50 meal” I’ve had delivered. For this price, I could’ve been cutting into a juicy steak instead of wrestling with plain noodles and soy sauce.
Since this was a delivery order, I can’t comment on the service or atmosphere—but based on the food alone, once in a blue moon?...
Read moreBeef Shoyu ramen combo was excellent (some MSG in all broths I was told but I didn't feel anything bad today)! The gyoza were standard deep fried with pork and veg filling. The slip broth, will like drinking creamy beef au jus. So delicious!
The handmade lemonade was very tasty. Somebody said pretty sour but I like sour so that was good. I did taste sweet in there too. Size was pretty big too so price was not bad.
We're four people, so did two Meals for two with onside of the table doing pork and the other beef. The other side said the pork was good too.

Today's lunch was later than usual at around 1pm. The place was packed and had to wait about 5min.
I'd give a solid 5 stars if there were some place to put bags or coats as of table was in center of the room so no bench to put them on. Other restaurants have home under the tables/counters while others had box storage under the stools. My coat and umbrella, luckily not wet, were on my lap during the visit.
There's a lack of Japanese noodle places in South Vancouver, so am glad this place opened. I'll definitely be...
