Been a local and regular for almost 10 years now. Recently got back from a long trip away from Canada for a month. One of the things my partner and I said we couldn’t wait to get was a poutine from here. The day before we left Canada we came here and we were looking forward to the day we came back to come here again. So when we got back home (after a 10 hour flight) the first thing we did was come here
Unfortunately despite not being busy the guy with the long beard at the cash seemed really annoyed that he had to stop his conversation and take our order. He took the order and was very flippant and dismissive and just overall rude or standoffish.
When he brought our orders he practically threw them down on the table so he could quickly get back to his conversation with somebody else, and the order was wrong. My partner very politely asked about it and he answered very bluntly like they’d asked a really stupid question and made them feel stupid before printing the receipt and acting incredulously saying the receipt shows what we ordered, which, hey, great, it shows we we weren’t charged for something and got a different order, but even if what we paid for is what we got it still isn’t what we ordered (all that confirms is that you punched in the wrong order there) before dismissing us and going back to his conversation once more, complaining tips (I’d tipped him 20% for context)
I get sometimes we have bad days and maybe it’s harder to put on a “customer service” act but we were completely polite and it wasn’t busy at all, we were the only ones who’d ordered and no other orders came in after us. Maybe it was slow and tats why. I dunno. But if you’re having a bad day or whatever don’t take it out on us.
We were so looking forward to our poutine from our favorite spot to signify our return to Canada, we’d talked about it on the flight and the days leading up to it and it was completely soured, my partner was hurt and embarrassed, and our orders were still wrong.
Really disappointed. This happened recently and I can’t stop thinking about it, I really regret not saying something in the moment or sticking up for my partner in particular but I think I was just in shock at how needlessly rude we’d been treated. After reflecting on it over the days i realize it’s completely unfair and unacceptable how we were treated and I’m leaving this review. We came here multiple times a month and have lived in the areas for almost 10years, any time anybody visits me I take them here, any time anybody asks for a recommendation for places to try I recommend them come here. Moreso than just a regular I’ve been an advocate for this place to try and get as many people to come here as I can to support the business
As much as I still firmly believe it’s the best poutine in Vancouver and even though I live a block away I don’t think I’ll be back just on principle. I know for a fact my partner won’t be back since they now feel intimidated, like they’ll get talked down to for asking a simple question, I won’t be recommending it to any more visitors or friends, or taking...
Read moreIt is what it says it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. For that it gets five stars. The menu could use a few more vegetarian options. Many of the variations on poutine they feature could easily be made with Beyond Burger or Beyond Sausage. The price is the same so that is not a factor... it's a choice Many restaurants serve a Beyond Beef burger. All that aside, I was hungry and and asked for a big dish of poutine with gravy (I know... gravy is made from beef drippings -bad me). The woman who rang in the order was very friendly and welcoming. She rang up a large poutine with a side of gravy. When she brought over the poutine was already bathed in gravy. She then sat a small soup bowl full of gravy on the side and announced poutine with a side of gravy. Obviously she knew when taking the order (and my money) the gravy was already on it and to order more was ridiculous. Most people would mention it to the person ordering. To be charitable, it was the last 30 minutes of her work day...perhaps she was exhausted. Still, it was obvious when she brought it, the bowl of gravy was not needed. I said as much. THE CORRECT and automatic response would be: Offer to take it back and either give me the cash, credit my card, or offer me the equivalent towards something else. Instead, I was cheerfully told I could take it with me and she would get me a lid.GEE THANKS . The prospect of carrying around a cumbersome paper bag containing a cardboard bowl of warm gravy with a plastic lid for the rest of evening did not go down as easily as the food ...which I repeat was delicious. None of the street people wanted it so I threw it away. I hate waste.
Atmosphere: The other customers were convivial and and animated. Something other than a hockey game or sports on the TV (if they must have TV) would be appreciated. I highly recommend this Poutine Palace and look forward to returning sooner than...
Read moreI was told that western Canada (like Vancouver) is probably the worst place to get poutine, but I thought it was pretty good here! This was my first time eating poutine in Canada so I'm no poutine expert, but I thought it was tasty. I mean, any meat and potatoes thing can't be that bad, right?
The fries were thick, hearty, and freshly fried. I really think that these thick cut fries are the way to go for this kind of dish. Since they're thicker, the fries could maintain their crispy and soft texture longer while soaking in a hot bath of gravy. Of course it got all soggy after a while, but they held their structure pretty well.
I got the smoked meat, which tasted like a less peppery pastrami, but it's still got the briny and slightly smoky characteristics. I thought it'd taste better if it was smokier, but it's still good.
I'm not sure how I feel about the cheese curds. I think they're there mainly for texture, because their flavor was so mild that I couldn't really taste them with all the gravy, fries, and meat. They did work well at scooping up a bunch of gravy, and their texture was pretty springy and fun.
What brought everything together was the gravy, which was thick, rich, and velvety. It had a savory flavor, and its saltiness gave it a bold profile. I could taste a highlight of celery, which was a nice touch as well. The gravy was designed to be mixed, and it added flavor to every other ingredient. It really made the whole thing a...
