I will start out with a positive. It is new. Very odd location deep inside the building. Why the 3 stars well for things it didn't have. Like slippers to slip on your feet when you are sitting in kotatsu table area when you have to use the "facilities". My guests were constantly complaining about that fact. Secondly the hovering of the waitresses. A traditional Izakaya in Japan is for people to get together and chat and eat and drink did I mention chat. Which means a trip to an Izakaya can and usually does last for hours. Never felt rushed in anyway in an Izakaya in Japan (this is a combination of factors which includes the fact that there is no tipping in Japan) Which results in being left alone to enjoy your time with your friends not constantly being bothered about ordering. This was a real and I mean real turn off for me. Now as far as the food goes.... well a co worker of mine was surprised to find poutine on the menu. They felt obliged to give it a try. No cheese and some meat with a very minimal amount of curry sauce on some fries. I said to her you do realize this is a Izakaya before she ordered it but she went ahead an ordered it regardless. The dinner for the 4 of us worked out to be $115 before tip. I did like the Koji Karage and the black sesame sauce. Bit pricey but the hovering was what really turned me off of this place. There is a big difference between being attentive to your customers and hovering aka looking for the table to turn over so you can collect your tip. They had on way to many servers for such a small restaurant. So my advice for Guu Davie get over to the Yokoyaya and pick up some cheap slippers for the people sitting in kotatsu table area and try getting that real Izakaya vibe in there where everything is laid back and...
Read moreI was just treated in the most DISRESPECTFUL way I've even been treated in a restaurant. My girlfriend and I went here to have dinner and sadly our food was cold, bland and I had a complaint about one of the ingredients not being listed on the menu which was all over my food. When I complained to our server who happened to be the manager he kept getting mad, talking over me, not even listening to what I had to say and kept mocking me for not knowing the ingredients in the Japanese food. We paid and were ready to leave, however, I wanted to talk to the manager and tell him that was extremely rude and disrespectful, he only kept talking over me and mocking me saying "it's a Japanese restaurant brooo" so at that point I knew I was just losing my time trying to talk with him, I asked one of his coworkers if there was any supervisor around but he seemed pretty scared of him and refused to answer, I finally asked the bartender and he said the superior was on holiday. As I was asking the bartender this guy (the manager) started YELLING AT MY GIRLFRIEND who was still at our table to leave and take me with her. I cannot believe how horribly we were treated at this place, the guy wouldn't even listen to what I told him and our whole night was ruined thanks to this guy. This was on October 10, around 7-8 pm and the manager was wearing a white and green striped shirt. I hope management at this place can do something about it, it seems all his coworkers are scared of this narcissistic man. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone, I hope no one gets treated the same way I did...
Read moreI usually do not write a bad review for Guu Restaurants, neither do I write a 1 star review at all. But this place was just a disappointment. The place itself is just sad, depressing, and the food itself was just not up to a Guu Restaurant standards at all.
I don't think it was the pandemic, because this place was packed full of people. It was a Saturday Night and all their tables were full. It was good I gave a call that morning to reserve a table of 5 for me and my friends.
We ordered tons of food. And their specials for that day, the pressed sushi, a salmon chirashi don, and their regular menu has everything sold out, literally asked for 6 off their regular menu and they were sold out.
Their specials were just really bad made too. Their pressed sushi had no sushi rice flavour, it was crispy, not the good crispy either.... And their chirashi don was just okay at best... with the sliced fish breaking apart instead of the regular proper cuts. On top of that, asking for mackerel off their regular menu was sold out and their ebi mayo as well. All sold out for some reason as it being a regular item on their menu. On top of that, their hot plate fish piece was just filled with fries that you can get down the street. SIGH.... As a person who LOVES Guu restaurant chains, this one really does NOT hit the standards.
I am so sadden by this experience and for sure will NOT come...
