First, the positives: great location, lovely day time staff. You will be walking distance to just about all the sites you want in Vancouver if you stay at O Canada. The day time staff were really lovely and kind. They stored our bags for a late departure, left very good instructions for a late arrival, no complaints there.||The decor is tired and old. We booked two rooms (we were in the Master Suite on the ground floor and the Penthouse, despite booking 8 months in advance and asking to be on the upper floor to be closer to our kids on the top floor), one with A/C, the other without. The one without (Master Suite) was fine the first night, sweltering the remaining two. A standing fan in the room was insufficient and cut out if you went above 2nd speed. Bathroom is one step above a hostel bathroom with a 1970s spigot, no working fan either and the beds were saggy. For what we paid, this hotel really could use some sprucing up. Perhaps the other rooms are better. The master suite was not great. The Penthouse was better.||The evening staff person had a 1 1/2 hour personal phone call on speakerphone reverberating throughout the house. We couldn't enjoy the common area at all because of her loud, lengthy conversation. Not the sort of B&B experience we've come to expect. ||A quibble about the breakfast. You have to pre-order which is totally fine, but the one day when we really needed to leave early, the breakfast didn't come to us for 45 minutes after sitting. It threw off our visit to the suspension bridge, putting us on a bus an hour later than desired and we were stuck with huge crowds. We ended up not even having the breakfast at the hotel the next day as we didn't want to have a repeat...we far preferred our wonderful coffee and breakfast at 49 parallel roasters, which I recommend too.||All in all, would we do it again? If you get a spruced up room, perhaps. If you are visiting outside of the hotter times of year, sure. But avoid the master suite and if you have plans that are on the early side, make sure to let them know that you are hoping for an on...

Read moreWe so wanted to give O Canada 5 stars as read such good reviews. This is not to say we didn't enjoy our stay, we did, but there were some negatives.
The positives first. Fantastic house, superbly kept. We stayed on the ground floor and the room was fantastic, and bed incredibly comfortable. Daniel meet us when we arrived and he was so helpful with information, showing us round and explaining everything, etc, etc. Small pantry area you can use 24/7 for coffee, soft drinks, cakes, and so on. You even have the option of an evening sherry in the lounge before heading out if you wish.
Location is superb. If you are getting there by public transport nearest bus stop is no more than 10 mins walk and the subway no more than 15 mins, even with a case. You are within 10 mins of the main shopping area and the nearest stop for the round city hop on hop off tour bus is just 2 blocks away. Plenty of good restaurants, again within walking distance of the house, and if you are walkers like us even the main areas such as Gas Town are only a 20 min walk.
The only reason we have marked O Canada down a star is the breakfast. Having ready the reviews i think we were expecting a buffet extravaganza. You do indeed get a different breakfast each day, but there is no choice on the warm option (on our last day it was eggs benny which i don't eat and this totally threw the chef for an alternative) and my partners sausage with her benny's came out cold. Not much cereal options either. I find it really hard to criticise as the staff are so friendly and the house lovely, but we have had better breakfasts in other B&B's both at home in the UK and away in other country's as well.
Though I have said what I've said above please do not let this put you off staying there, the positives far outweigh the negative, just be prepared that the breakfast is not amazing as some reviews have said, this was our personal view after our stay, which we did...
