I had been coming to Sushi Van on monthly basis since it opened a couple of years ago. The food is poor to mediocre and the prices are average but have been gradually increasing. Tonight I decided never to return.
My dinner was accidentally brought to another table and I had to wait an additional 25 minutes for my meal while my partner had her food. The person who received my food had their meal comp'd by the waiter. I figured a similar offer would be made to me, the person who was actually inconvenienced by this scenario, but I was wrong.
I complained that my dining experience had been affected by their accident but neither the waiter nor the manager were willing to do anything about it. They said I could pay the bill or walk out. I paid the bill and walked out.
They lost a customer that could have easily been retained. All I asked for was equitable treatment; that they give me the same offer as the person who ate my food, who wasn't inconvenienced, and I stay a customer. They were unwilling to extend that offer to me and couldn't provide any reasonable...
Read moreI enjoyed sushivan in person more last time I was there. I ordered takeout today and was so sad because i got no wasabi in my bag with 4 rolls, and i was really wanting the flavour of wasabi, but they had already closed by the time i got home. The tempura was crispy and delicious however(albeit a bit smaller than i was expecting, still worth it), and the sushi triangle was delicious and well balanced. The alaska roll was a bit too salty, but the chopped scallop roll was quite nice. Overall i would have given this a 4 star review, but getting home and realizing they put no wasabi in my bag left the experience a touch lacking. Maybe just ask on the phone if the customer wants wasabi next time( I would assume you would atleast put it in for the salmon/tuna roll, or one of the rolls? We also only got 3 soy sauce packets and usually i have more at home, but we ran out last week, so also a minor letdown. All in all still yummy and pretty affordable, will definately be back, but make sure to get more soy sauce and wasabi...
Read moreYou can't beat Sushivan in freshness and taste. It's as good as it gets and at a great price.
My wife and I were in the area and got hungry around 4:30PM. That's when they open for dinner. We decided to give Sushivan a try and we were extremely pleasantly surprised at how fresh their raw fish is and how high quality it is. You can put their sushi against any higher end sushi and we even thought it was better than Minami in Yaletown. They could easily increase their prices by 50% and it still would be worth it. We don't live in the neighborhood but if we want classic nigiri sushi or something like a chirashi don, we are gonna drive out to Sushivan instead of going to our more local favourites in Kitsilano.
It's very underrated and I may be doing myself disservice by writing this in the future but they deserve it. Amazing nigiri and value second to none.
If you like raw fish, I highly recommend their chirashi don, salmon belly, toro, salmon, tuna, negitoro, and...
