I've been craving a mocha for the longest time and I was so excited to come in here and try their mocha. When I got to the counter I was greeted by a young girl who was super sweet, and an older lady who would swat her hand as she was taking my order. I'm thinking, hmm okay, that's a bit strange. But I ordered my mocha anyways - a tall dark mocha, long shot, with soy. I settled in at a corner where I had a perfect view of the baristas making the orders. Sure enough, the swatting lady who took my order made my drink. And oh my goodness, it was a SH/TSHOW. For one, she took leftover coffee grinds from the coffee grinder and used that as the base for an espresso shot. Two, when she put in the espresso into the machine, the younger girl was near her and she yelled "long shot!" and the older lady swatted her hand away anyways and continued to let the espresso run. When I got my drink, it was way too hot. It was the saddest mocha I've ever had - burnt and bitter, and tasted like disappointment.
After two sips, I asked another barista if my drink could be remade - and he happily did. (THANK GOODNESS) I once again peeped how he made the mocha. This time a thermometer was used for the milk!! And the coffee grinder - he used a coffee grinder! If it weren't for him, this review would have been a one star. Or no star if it's that even possible. 10/10 would request for a particular barista to make my...
Read moreCheesecake Emporium I stopped by this latest location for a slice of their delicious cheesecake to go. They had a refrigerator case displayed with a multitude of flavours like: pumpkin, key lime, raspberry white chocolate and cherry & chocolate to name a few. I couldn't pass up the chocoholic cheesecake. It was a marbled chocolate that was not too sweet, silky and smooth baked on a chocolate cookie crust. It was missing a berry coulis or a berry garnish & whipped cream garnish. The contrast of tart to sweet would have taken it over the top. Unfortunately my take out container had no embellishments whatsoever- no even whipped cream! It just looked as if the cheesecake was just plunked in. Bare bones, no finesse. This location was the former Death by Chocolate cafe. Large windows, moderate amount of lighting, typical cafe seating for two. Sandwich boards have the same morning specials found at their other locations; muffin & coffee, scone & coffee priced at $3.95 and up. As I recall from other past visits, their muffins are tender and moreish. Looks like my next visit will be for a muffin &...
Read moreI've been here a few times over the years, and unfortunately it's never met my expectations enough to entice my return.
In the past, I recall the drinks being sufficient although not exceptionally memorable. The cheesecakes, which are supposed to be a highlight, are sweetened to the point where other flavours are overpowered.
Today I tried one of their Thai Noodle Chicken Wraps, and eventually regretted it. I was put off by the small size and high price, and the wrap was soggy, greasy, and overly salty to the point of being nauseating. Imagine if someone slapped Thai takeout in a tortilla. I was also disappointed in the excessive packaging—pre-prepared in plastic wrap, then grilled in wax paper, which is mostly discarded for a 15¢ paper bag. I would have been better off just eating the cold wrap for takeout, which might have been more palatable.
The repetitive disco/house music made the atmosphere feel less inviting. The service was timely but not...
