Vancouver's Best Shanghainese Eats – Tried & Tested! 🥢

First time trying this restaurant! Was hesitant to try because this location previously kept changing restaurants. Friend and I ordered the following Beef Roll (about $5.75)- the most flavourful item that we ordered. Sauce is familiar, some kind of hoisin sauce. I liked it the most out of everything. Spicy Stewed Beef Noodles (about $8.75) - Broth was clear and light. Beef was super soft and tender ☺. I couldn't taste any spiciness at first, but it gets spicier as you eat. I would say it's pretty mild for someone who can eat pretty spicy. Would have been great if the soup and beef had more flavour. I normally get clear soup rather than thick soup bases, but this one was a bit bland for me. Noodles are smooth, but perhaps slightly overcooked. Beef was the best part! Steamed Pork Dumplings (小籠包, menu name is Steamed Pork Buns / about $5.75) - I tried one and it was pretty delicious, and this is coming from someone who never orders pork dishes because I can usually taste a nasty flavour in it. Surprisingly, I couldn't taste it in these dumplings. I also normally dislike these types of dumplings. I would eat these again! Braised Chicken Noodle Soup (about $8.75) - My friend expected a clear broth but it turned out to be a condensed milk soup base 😶. I had a sip of the soup and it was definitely something different. He mentioned that it tasted better as he kept eating it, like an acquired taste. His noodles were also overcooked. It isn't something he woukd order all the time. Overall, I would go back again for the beef roll, pork dumplings, and try out other stuff on their menu. UPDATE Jan 24/19: Tried the five spice beef soup noodle and steamed mantou. Broth is very clear and light. It tastes like my mom's home cooking. I like the spicy broth a lot more though. The sliced beef is very soft and melts in your mouth. Mantou is lacking the subtle sweetness. I like eating my mantou plain and the condensed milk is too sweet. UPDATE May 14/19: Veggie buns are delicious (minus the chinese mushrooms that I hate) - bun is soft, veggies were flavourful. It was refreshing. Not oily but might be slightly salty for some.

***updated 2024 review*** New menu posted We got the steamed pork buns ($7.95), pan fried pork buns ($8.75), beef roll ($7.95), dandannoodle($11.50), beef noodle ($12.95). The XLB wrapper is always a bit too thick for me here. My favorite is the pan fried pork dumplings. Crispy and juicy. The dandan noodles have a strong peanut flavour and the portion is generous for the price. The beef roll isn't like your typical beef roll. It's thinner and has less frills to it but it does the trick and they give you lots of sweet hoisin sauce. Overall this has become a staple for us whenever we crave Shanghai food. It's cheap and satisfying ***2022 review*** Came to pickup my to go order on Saturday. The food was ready when we got there. We ordered the steamed pork buns, pan fried pork buns and Dan Dan noodles. I always get their pan fried pork buns because they always have lots of juice inside. This time was no exception. The price of the pan fried pork buns was $7.25 which I think is reasonable for 5 buns. The outside was crispy. I found the bottom skin a little thicker than usual but still delicious. The pork felt a little dry but other than that pretty delicious. The steamed pork buns were mediocre. The skin is pretty thin but again the pork was dry and had less soup than the pan fried pork buns. Would definitely recommend the pan fried pork buns OVER the steamed pork buns. TIP: they automatically charge 0.25 cents for a paper bag via phone orders. So if you don't want that extra charge maybe let them know you'll bring your own bag?

Small restaurant - almost a hole in the wall - can probably seat 20 patrons at a time. Busy place is always a good sign. My wife and I came by a few days ago at around 830pm. Lucked out getting the last time. There was consistently a small lineup throughout our visit there through 915pm. Food came relatively quickly for the most part, we ordered xiaolongbao, pan fried bao, spicy dumplings, and a veggie rice noodle. Spicy dumplings took maybe 15 to 20 minutes; at one point we were wondering if they forgot about it. Food was decent; the star was definitely the xiaolongbao. It has a thin shell and packed with flavorful juice. Spicy dumplings were good - though it only has a small hint of spiciness to it. Lacks a punch if you are in to spicy food. Veggie rice noodle was just ok. The Pan Fried Bao was something I've been looking forward to the most and it was a disappointment. It was fried nicely, however, the pork was flavorless and very bland. Not enough spice on it, or quite simply, lack of saltiness. What it does well though is the ample amount of juice in it. If you take a big initial bite on it, be careful of juice spewing out from the other side of the bun. Service was quick and staff were friendly. Might return for their xiaolongbao for sure as it is one of the top places for it in my books. Pan fried bao, however, did not live up to...
