I almost didn't find this place as the sign and door face diagonally, so when you walk down Cook street, looking at street facing signs, you likely won't see it. The entrance is on the corner of the building. We walked in, intent on ordering a latte and chai and hoping to order a gluten free goodie, due to allergies, not choice. They have larger mugs, so you can order a sixteen ounce to stay, which we did. We also ordered the flourless chocolate cake and a chocolate, quinoa muffin to go, for later.
For seating there are two, oversized chairs which sit low, but so far back you are almost laying back to have any back support. The rest of the seating is cute, with log pole backed chairs, but not the most comfortable...so you won't want to stay too long.
The washroom, like most around BC, is ungendered. It was clean and had enough room to take care of business...which is all that is required.
The coffee and chai were warm but cool enough to drink immediately and both had good flavor and body. The flourless, chocolate cake was delicious and perfect for sharing. I told the employees whoever is baking their GF goodies outbakes the only GF shop we found in Victoria. We tried the muffin, two days later...as it was forgotten while we ran around. It was still moist and had good, soft but firm crumb that didn't stretch a whole lot when pulled apart before separating. Many gluten free baked goods tend to be too elastic, which also makes for a gummy mouth feel. Their baker knows how to bake gluten free, even if they didn't begin in that arena.
Parking is fairly easy. Most of the downtown street area is pay for until six in the evening, but it's reasonable.
Their chalkboard menu states they sell gluten free buns Saturday through Tuesdays as well. I will most...
Read moreMothers with babies are unwelcome! In fact, the whole establishment was discriminatory towards people with families.
After eating lunch there, I was told by staff not to come back with my 6 month old baby who was in a stroller. My baby needed to be changed, yet there was no change table in the washroom, so I asked if I could change him on a little bench and they said no. I asked if they were asking me to leave with a baby that has a soiled diaper and they said yes I should go and not come back. As a paying customer, I found it very rude to be told not to come back given the circumstances. All I was trying to do was make my child more comfortable.
I also noticed that the door doesnât have a wheelchair accessibility button so itâs hard to get inside with a stroller. Some places that donât have this will just come and help with the door if needed, but no such help was offered. They obviously donât like people who have...
Read moreI came here to compliment the young people working at this location. I've been a regular over the past few weeks and it's been a delight to see the way they interact with customers, especially seniors in our community who might be living alone and are in need of some healthy, wholesome interactions. They know their names, their orders and always take the time to build banter with them. There is a loneliness epidemic in our world; many of us still struggle to recover from the effects of the lockdowns on our mental health and sense of safety in the world. People like the staff of this location are contributing positively to a world that needs them greatly. I sincerely hope the management of Bubby Rose considers what an asset these young folks are to the success of a coffee shop becoming a beloved must-visit staple in the villageâand that their pay reflects the value of these...
