A perfect fit for a relaxed meal in laid-back James Bay.
I've been to this location a few times, and enjoyed every meal experience here. The restaurant is built into a lovely turn-of-the-century old home, with lots of room inside and out - they even have both a chill internet lounge AND special-events rooms upstairs! As a bonus, there's a large wrap-around patio outside, with room for dozens of people in the warmer weather.
Inside, the high ceilings and simple rustic-esque decor( is that a thing? )give the dining area plenty of open space: no bumping elbows with the tables next to you. The old wooden floor is charming, as is the central fireplace and the menus tucked into classical books on each table.
The breakfast I had here was excellent: creamy eggs, medium bacon not-quite-crisp, flax-press bread with an apple compote side and even some greens with vinaigrette - delicious and the perfect size to fill me without feeling stuffed. The bright, airy feel of the room with its many windows helps to really get you revved for the day with a morning meal here.
The dinner we had was at a table towards the rear of the main room, tucked into an expansive bay window. We had a great view outside as we dined in the bright sunshine, feeling more like we were at home than dining out. The meal was excellent: I had their oatmeal pancakes, which were firm and filling while not being heavy. While it did get a bit warm inside during the summer, the many open windows let breezes in nicely.
The service is excellent, with attentive staff keeping drinks full and diners happy. No-one ever seems like they're rushed, as I believe they keep a solid staff-to-guest ration even during the busier times of day. Everyone was friendly and smiling and it felt like they really wanted you to stay to enjoy your meal as long as you liked - a rarity in the busy Vic meal scene.
I'd go back again in a heartbeat, any time of day. This is the sort of place I've love to live nearer too, so I could meander down for breakfast, linger until lunch on the patio, then write all afternoon in the...
Read more⚠️Warning: If you have alergies, this place may not take them seriously!⚠️ This place is quite charming, in that it is in an old Victorian home, but it did not live up to our expectations in terms of food and service. My wife disclosed to the server that she has an alergy to green peppers and red onions, and asked if the soup of the day had any of those ingredients and his response was to shrug his shoulders and say "Maybe." Later the kitchen determined that it could have red onions, so another soup was substituted. We each ordered the oatmeal pancake. The options included bacon or sausage. My wife ordered the sausage option, and after taking a bite, discovered it started to bother her throat. We asked for the ingredient list, and low and behold it contained jalepeno peppers which would fall under the green pepper category. The oatmeal pancakes themselves were overcooked and dry and quite crispy on the edges. They didn't look like the photos that other reviewers had shared. We ordered the sweet and salty lattes, and asked how much honey was in each serving and the server told us "two teaspoons". When sipping on the lattes, the honey was undetectable, certainly not two teaspoons and we didn't get the salt until we got to the dregs in the cup. Overall I give this establishment a thumbs down and wouldn't visit again. The servers attitude and lack of attention was inexcusable, especially considering that the cheque showed his name with his title as...
Read moreThis is definitely a favourite place of mine to go now. It's tricky when ordering to know exactly what is on each dish because some of the items on the menu are not too clear. For instance, I ordered the seedy and cashew cheese plate and then the fermented plate. Had I known that the seedy plate had fermented veggies with it, I wouldn't have ordered them separately. The person taking my order should have pointed that out and I could have ordered something else to compliment the seedy dish. It was kinda disappointing but nonetheless I did enjoy the extra serving of house made fermented veggies. They do an excellent job at that. My friend also ordered a vegan benny and somehow they made 2 of them. Luckily she was only charged for one, but it seems like a big mix up with whoever took our order that day. Additionally, it would be nice if they could have the soup of the day written somewhere by where you order behind the stairs, I did not understand that it was "Chunky" Vegetable soup and thought I heard "Turkey" Vegetable, therefore I did not order the soup even though I was really craving a good soup at the time. Anyhow, all this to say...the food is very delish but I think that day they could have improved on their service. Busy place so somewhat understandable. Oh, and the seedy toast was much better than I thought it would be....light texture and really flavourful!...
