We hired Picnic as our caterer for our wedding this past summer and their service and food were PHENOMENAL! In Victoria, solid catering is hard to come by, so when we found out our favourite brunch location offered catering and was available for our wedding dates, we were thrilled. They were extremely professional, communicated appropriately and with ample time, and made the process stress-free. They provided us a variety of different menus to choose select from, with a great menu tasting a few weeks ahead of our date, to review all the dishes we would be providing to our guests. They customized the menu to provide my husband and I with dairy-free versions, and on the day of the wedding was able to accommodate a vegan guest that was missed when providing dietary restrictions. Before the first course was even served, our guests had already been raving about the delicious charcuterie boards for cocktail hour. Two months later and our guests are still raving, as are we! There was more than enough food to go around, our guests were satisfied, as were we, we only wish we could have eaten more! We would highly recommend Picnic for dining-in, takeout, delivery, and catering. You can tell their passion for food runs deep, and their hospitality will put a smile on your face! Thank you Picnic for making our day so...
Read moreOrdered the congee.
As a biased person being Asian, it was not the congee I expected especially visually. This one was outstanding with colors and textures. The bold ingredients were sitting atop a bed of thick brown rice. The rice was not too viscous and also not as fluid as Asian congee would be generally. It might be close to the viscosity of oats where it will still fall out of your spoon if you tip it over but not immediately.
The temperature also is quite different. I'm guessing this was about 50°C / 122°F.
So eating the congee, the ingredients were grouped together and arranged quite thoughtfully. I thought of mixing everything together just like you generally would in an Asian congee, but my senses at this point whispered otherwise.
So I went about my dish picking the ingredients, often combining 2-3 at a time as I was scouring away from the bed of viscous rice underneath. I found that eating it this way gives an easier time to distinguish and appreciate the flavors and textures as compared to having everything mixed together. This made the dish quite engaging as you try different combinations of the ingredients. It was light yet felt. Different from Asian congee and unique...
Read moreNice concept. Lots of space indoor and out, very chill able. Definitely feels like you are having a picnic with the picnic style tables/seating!!! I personally love it. It's like an uppercase IKEA cafeteria concept with their own picnic spin.
Good variety of health options. I did find what I ordered a tiny bit lackluster in taste though..although on the menu it sounded quite innovative & appealing. Maybe it's a one off. I'd come back to test out on a different day as the ingredients were nice choices! (Micro bowl). Smoothies are really expensive and basic but I imagine you get what you pay for (quality fruit, less fillers).
All in all, nice place to stop for a bite without much of a thought/plan. Convenient location on Fort St next to nice shops to stroll if you have the time (auction house, boutique furniture, consignment, specialty local gifts etc)
I am curious to try the Halloumi sandwich next! A unique offering!
Their menu does have a fresh, healthy, slight twist when reading it! Curious to try more on the menu is a good way to put it. And with the fun, bright and casual dining space..I will definitely be back for the ambience when being casually...
