THIS MIGHT BE THE WORST CHINESE FOOD TAKE OUT EVER – We ordered take out 2 days ago and from what we read in the online reviews, we were really anticipating a wonderful meal. We ordered lamb kabobs, the Ox King Special Beef Noodles Soup, Juicy Pork Xiao Long Bao and the Chongqing Style Spicy Noodles. The lamb kabobs came in a paper foil bag that wasn’t closed and had spilled into the bag. It had 3 skewers, each with 4 pieces of meat. This meat was comparable to chewing on a leather tassel. Gristly, tough and flavorless. The pieces of meat were so small that the meat from one skewer fit on top of the fork at the same time, with room to spare. Hardly a kabob, more of an amuse-bouche. The Ox King Special Beef Noodles Soup came in two containers. One container held overcooked packaged noodles that arrived in a sad pitiful lump which was inseparable. In the other container, a broth if you will. The broth was confusing and tasted like a sweet and sour soup packet that had been dropped into lukewarm water. I’m still not sure what the floaty bits were. The beef shanks were nowhere to be seen. Instead, 4 lumps of tasteless gelatinous fat with microscopic tufts of beef attached, enough so that you could tell what meat it was, but not enough to call it a shank by any means, maybe a scrap. Also, some tired julienned cucumber, bean sprouts and 1/3 of a Shanghai Choy, separated into 6 small leaves. The Juicy Pork Xiao Long Bao were freezer burned. Not juicy, as stated. They were undercooked, chewy and inedible. Tucked away inside the bao was about half a teaspoon of pale unseasoned meat. I’m pretty sure these are the same ones you can buy in the frozen aisle at Fairway. The Chongqing Style Spicy Noodles arrived in the same fashion as the beef noodle soup, an inseparable lump of overcooked noodles. I found the second third of the choy, it was hidden beneath the noodles in a slurry of starchy liquid. No spicy sauce. No. Spice. Whatsoever. What happened to the last third of the choy? These 4 dishes with delivery and tip was $70.27. This ‘food’ was a huge insult to us and an insult to the Chinese no less, and their food culture. We always support local vendors in our community but I will never, ever purchase food from here again. I think this restaurant needs to re-examine the authenticity of the dishes on their menu along with the food quality and its preparation. Sad, sad, sad. 4 thumbs down. I would give this -5...
Read moreI was all ready to give this place 4.5 Stars until I bit into a un undercooked / raw chicken skewer. :p
Other than that I quite enjoyed my rice noodles with veg/seasame sauce. I guess it depends on what's In season or what they have on hand for veggies. I thought it was going to be assorted mixed veg, but it was just sliced cucumbers. However the sesame and Northern Chinese type flavorings were quite .A hint of allspice in there was a nice surprise
I would give a pass on the enoki mushrooms which were heavy handedly spiced and strangely sweet.
I also tried the lamb skewers which were strangely enough in contrast to the undercooked chicken, overcooked and chewy. Nice flavor but way too heavy-handed on the salt.
I guess it all depends on what you order and what time of day, but if you do have the skewers make sure you ask for yours well done! I had takeout and even with the sitting time in a well wrapped to go bag, they were still raw in the upper portion. Ate the tip off it and it was delicious - you could taste the marinade with the Chinese wine undertone.
Unfortunately I can't say much more than that because I didn't want to risk the rest of it because it was raw and you can see it in the photo- yuck!
Got there at around 5 and would highly recommend it as take out as people have said. It's very small and not too cozy for cold season with metal stools and doors wide open on a cool day because of the kitchen.
The owners and staff were great people and really love what they're doing and that's why they are getting two stars instead of one even though I had I mostly raw chicken skewer. I would say it was probably the exception to the usual...
Read moreWe were looking forward to trying this spot because we heard it is the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Victoria. We ordered 3 dishes: sauerkraut fish noodles soup, lamb skewers, and bing with beef. We enjoyed the noodles soup - noodles tasted fresh and chewy, soup broth was flavourful and had a nice kick, but there was so little fish! The lamb skewers were well flavoured and the lamb itself had a good balance of meat/fat. Each order comes with 3 skewers. We tried ordering 3 flavours (each skewer a different flavour in our order) but that was not allowed. We were a bit puzzled by the bing with beef - the Chinese donut inside was not fresh, we could not taste the beef, the egg pancake/crepe was a bit oily, and the entire dish lacked flavour. This restaurant is on the pricer side of Chinese food. The photos on their menu are not accurate (e.g. dry noodles are shown as soup noodles and dim sum quantities are different), so in doubt, ask the staff. We saw an ant crawling around the...
