I don’t give a five star very often, but this place blew me away. First off for anyone else that’s Gluten Free or Celiac, the absolute peace of mind that you can order something made in a GF kitchen and not be stressed out about problems is phenomenal.
Secondly their GF menu is a second standalone which was nicely flushed out with a mixture of dishes. i’ve read other reviewers talking about the cost and yes it is a bit over average but I guess the dishes I ordered were just on the mark. all three were very large servings and good ingredients. Plus you know when you are used to gluten-free lifestyle you unfortunately get used to very high prices -so this seemed reasonable for me.
Go to be honest it was my first sit down since the pandemic so I was pretty excited, but the whole experience was great. Didn’t wait long for a table, had excellent and attentive service, very open to answer questions and make suggestions. No awkward having to explain being gluten-free or asking about ingredients in substitutions. It was just easy. I had a nice seat facing the street in the window for some people watching.
The food did not take long and filled my entire table! I guess because it’s been a long time since I’ve eaten out , but I was shocked at how much food there was on my plate. My three dishes lasted me 3 1/2 meals. And If you haven’t read my reviews before, I eat big!
OK let’s talk about the food. I did shoot a great video of it but unfortunately you can’t upload it so check out my pictures.
I had a combination of standard chinese dishes and one fun dish being the tofu eggplant hot pot -which came so hot it was bubbling for a good five minutes! So you get entertainment and a meal ;). Nice balance of hot, sweet and sour, a little bit too much thin sauce for my liking and I would’ve liked some shiitake mushroom in there , but that’s a personal choice.
The other dishes were your standard Chinese fare. The first was mixed greens with prawn which had the standard Chinese take away flavor. One which I hadn’t had since before glueing gluten-free so that was pretty fantastic. MSG enhanced? Highly likely. However I didn’t have the response to it so maybe not.
And the last was the recommendation by my server for the garlic ginger beef with snow peas. I’m still shocked at how much beef was on that plate - seriously look at the pictures. Very well seasoned, the beef was surprisingly tender considering it’s not a high-quality cut which means they braised it properly. veggies were perfect colour and crunchy texture Could’ve done with a bit less oil but otherwise nice.
Obviously had a lot leftover to take away and they were great with the whole experience. no awkwardness. No fuss. They brought really decent quality eco take away containers ( 🙏 ) then gave me the time and space to put my food the way that I wanted.
I had a happy belly, a very happy state of mind, good and ample leftovers and a great memory which will bring me back the next time...
Read moreHadn't been to this restaurant in a long time but I recently read about their varied vegetarian section on the menu. Decided to give it a try on a cold, blustery Saturday night. We were early just after 5:00 so not many in yet. Of course the first priority is to seat people neat the windows (also next to the cold doorway). Being an obliging guy I accepted rather than asking for a warmer area. Soon there was a lineup and the door was held wide open while people queued up. So that was a bit uncomfortable. My friend and I drank some green tea and browsed the menu which was divided into sections as Chinese menus often are. I went to the vegetables section and there was a pretty good selection of about 8 or 10 items all sounding pretty appetizing. I ordered an eggplant tofu hotpot and my friend a crispy ginger tofu dish. We ordered a side of rice (both white and brown rice available). Both were marked as "Spicy" dishes. They arrived in good time and were plunked down without much ado. Both dishes were well prepared but I'd say they fell a bit short on the spicy side. The "Ginger" tofu dish tasted like they forgot the part where they added the ginger. Likewise my Eggplant Tofu seemed to be shy on the ginger. As to spicy (a hallmark of Northern Szechuan cooking) it was hard to say that I broke into a sweat while eating. Other than that it was very well prepared and presented. If i go back I'll be prepared to specify they go a little heavier on the seasoning. The service was smiling and efficient. When I say efficient I mean there was always an eye on the queue at the door and a subtle sense that we should vacate and make room, which we did and headed early to the theatre. I think I'd prefer J&J for lunch when you don't mind rushing a bit. On another note, I have yet to find a good spicy Szechuan noodle house (not Chow Mein)...
Read moreFirst off, I REALLY dislike leaving poor reviews and i contemplated not leaving one at all.
We frequently visit many restaurants and J&J came highly recommended.
This was our first time here and upon walking in the restaurant, there was a large lineup. Lots of people coming to get their pickup, (3) door dash drivers, and a few small groups of dine in eaters.
The wait was slightly long in line, perhaps 20 mins to get seated. While slightly long, we saw it as a good sign that obviously the food was incredible and worth waiting for.
The walls were adorned with about 15 first place food award plaques, setting the stage for what was about to come.
Once finally seated, we ordered quickly and food started coming in about 15-20 mins. The first plate to arrive to the table was sweet and sour chicken. The first few bites were awful. 50% of the pieces that arrived were the size of a small finger nail and were 100% batter without chicken. The remaining pieces were about 85% batter with the thinnest, chewiest chicken you could imagine. We had to send it back to the kitchen.
On a positive note, the server took a look at the plate, apologized and had the kitchen remake it.
The next plate to come was ginger fried beef and garlic pork with sweet dark sauce.
The first few bites were okay, but mostly lacking flavor. We ended up paying and leaving 75% of all (3) dishes on the table as they were not worth consuming.
We left feeling very disappointed and questioned all the hype we've heard.
The good: the staff were very friendly and the restaurant was clean with a great warm atmosphere.
I'm hoping that since it was new years eve perhaps the kitchen was over worked and that it was just a bad one off experience. We love supporting family owned...
