Visit every time we are down in the area. They have the best authentic East coast donairs . They not only use the proper ingredients, the meat texture is bang on, crisp with just the right kick. They prepare it with a nice base oil like sauce that drips with flavourful heavenly goodness that soaks into the pita, prepared to perfection.

The smell, oh that smell! reminds me of authentic souvlaki from street vendors in Athens Greece, Kypseli square. The kind where the chef uses sharp knives to slice off crispy chunks of a lamb and beef mix from a spit over an open flame, wrapped with chunks of onion in wax paper. Not the same exact taste, these donairs are Godliness in their own category, but the smell brings me back there time and time again. There is nothing like eating something that smells so good.

The only thing I would like to see them change is the thickness of the sauce. It's perfectly tasting authentic sweet Donair sauce, only too thin. They need to thicken it up a bit. Please do but if you don't, who cares, it won't stop me from getting a piece of heaven every time I'm in the...

My review is very mixed because I understand that there are challenges running an authentic donair shop in Ontario so I am very understanding. I’ve been going to this establishment since it opened and was by the courthouse. When the guy who ran it was running the shop you could feel the east coast energy! (Iykyk) It was always a good vibe and he was always so cheerful. Since they’ve moved there is a women (mid 50’s) and she always seems so miserable. Last time I was in there she was very rude for no reason. I guess she was having a bad day. The food is good. It has the flavour profile of a real donair however they don’t roast the beef on the spit long enough to achieve the carmelized finish and I find the meat is sliced too thin. The large might even be smaller than a small out east but I understand why because it’s expensive to get the products from east to west. Overall, the woman should adjust her attitude when dealing with customers. Us Eastcoastere are known for our good cheer and friendly hospitality and my last few run ins with her did not...

On one visit, I came and ordered a wrap and it was very small. On my second visit, I just asked him if they sell the donair beef on its own because I like to make it my way. The guy and two other people who seemed to be the owners started acting as if I was asking for something illegal, “why do you want it without bread?”, “is it you the one who recently opened a restaurant down the street serving donairs and you need it for your restaurant?”, for gods sake, if you are that concerned and cautious, that clearly means you have no confidence in what you are serving, last time and never again. Looking forward to see this place shutting down one day as its customer service is literally a ZERO. Update: A response to the owner, you mean it can never happen in any restaurant but your restaurant :) The reviews from other customers does prove that I am not lying which literally shows...

I have been coming here since they had a location in Oshawa. My buddy and I would roll up, park outside on the street and go in and eat late at night. Then we’d finish there and go eat more at Smoke’s Poutine…before they went downhill. The donairs at Down East Donair are simply the best I’ve ever had. The meat is cut off a spit, fried and then mixed with lettuce, onions, cheese and tomatoes if you want. Hot sauce too and of course donair sauce. And then all put onto a warm soft pita and folded. It is simply the best. Shane the owner has become like a friend and always remembers me when I come in. Sadly because they aren’t open til 4am like they used to it’s harder for me to get out during their business hours. But I’ve managed twice since mid December. I can’t wait til my next one!

It's been a long time since I've had a Donair. This yummy dish was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is now known as Halifax's Official Food! Down East Donairs makes delicious a version of it in several sizes, from the traditional pita wrap to topping a pizza, making egg rolls, or even topping poutine with it. I had the small pita wrap and it was delicious! The well seasoned meat is cooked on a vertical rotating spit and then shaved off for serving. The traditional sweet sauce is key to making it authentic! I just wish I had gotten better pictures before devouring it. I'll just have to go back! PS - They also have the best variety of soft drinks I have seen at a restaurant, with lots of hard to find, and unusual flavours, many from Eastern Canada. Sorry, no pictures.

I want to say I'm very disappointed! This review it's not for just 1 visit to Down East Donairs. I have been a total of 6 times now the first 5 to the Oshawa location and my 6th to the Whitby. Every single time the food is great, the customer serves ok, it's the size of the portions that really bothers me and this time I spoke up about it that on the menu it doesn't have the oz. Of meat beside each size so you know what to expect ( and I'm not going to change it) was the response I got from the guy behind the counter. Very rude .
