So this was our second time at Sous sol, (Wednesday the 15th, our valentines). We ordered oysters which we do everywhere that offers them and we did enjoy them. We ordered the bison tartar as Tatar is another one of our go to's and bison was something different for us. Unfortunately the server did not bring us the bison, she brought us beef which we didn't know until our bill came. It was pretty disappointing, but even more so was her reaction when we mentioned it. She just said oh I thought you wanted beef. No apology, nothing. Then I had ordered a cocktail , a rum punch which she asked if I wanted "fire and fun", which of course why not? It was indeed both of those things, the cocktail came with some fire and a coconut marshmallow that you could roast so definitely worth it, but again we weren't made aware that there was a $5 cost. Again, it's not about the money but more just about letting someone know. Then when we brought that up it was the condescending tone our server gave us like "oh I can take that off like" but making it seem like we were nickel and diming. We just wanted to point out that maybe let people know there is a charge. The foie gras was delicious. We then both had their MB beef tenderloin, roasted garlic carrots and potatoes dauphinoise. The carrots and potatoes were delicious. The disappointing thing about the tenderloins originally was that my boyfriend got his minutes before I did so he could start eating while I watched him, and then mine was definitely not medium rare, but his was although we double checked with the server when he brought it out to him as he had ordered medium. Half way through I caught a glimpse of his and i was like that looks medium rare, so we swapped. During this time our server had not come back since we received our meals so we didn't bother making a fuss. Her response when we mentioned the mishap was, was no, yours was the medium rare and then well did you two eventually figure it out. I have been in customer service for 20 plus years and served for several of those years. I 100 percent understand mistakes happen. This was not the first nor will it be the last time things will be wrong with a meal. It's what happens after the errors are made. The pretentious and self righteous attitude this server gave us. Not taking any responsibility and not actually seeming to care at all. It's unfortunate because we live walking distance from Sous sol and don't think we...
Read moreSo, the luckiest guy in the world took the most beautiful woman on Earth out to dinner. Weve been breaking bread together for 24 years, but tonight is special and Im determined to impress her. The word is out – Sous Sol is guaranteed to satisfy. (Finding the place is a fun activity in itself. Hint – it’s in the Basement!) We walked in and entered an atmosphere that wrapped itself around us like a big hug from a long lost best friend. Our smiles were immediate and lasted until our heads hit the pillow. Our host welcomed us and showed us our table. But we didnt sit for long, we just had to explore. This little spot is full of wonder - you only have to open your eyes. We felt free to walk about and enjoy the details that make this place special. We ordered drinks and our host knew exactly how to ramp up expectations - he put fire to my dates drink. Then it was on to the real reason we were at Sous Sol – the food. Our handsome host walked us through everything and in no time he crowded our small table with plates of beautiful sumptuous food. The presentation is as good as anything you`d see on the Champs-Élysées in Paris!! (Well, I’ve never been so I’m just guessing. ) Every bite is wonderful!! Every dish is amazing!! At the end someone let out our secret, we were celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary. We were served champagne in glasses that at one time were door prizes given out at Petro Canada with every fill. We laughed out loud at how perfect the moment was. We truly had the most fantastic time and we’re very happy to have another wonderful memory to savor. The food is perfect. The employees are perfect. Sous Sol is perfect. And if you’re looking for a perfect date or just a great place to meet to eat, you better get...

Walking in, there was a table with a typewritter and other items covered in...wax? Regardless, it made me feel ill. We sat, and I wanted to leave. My wife encouraged me to stay given I was so looking forward to coming, and we were celebrating my birthday.
The ambiance seemed to be "haunted house." It was dark and gritty. The rugs on the floor seemed dusty. I appreciate they were aiming for ironic with the 90s value village donation content, but it felt like they were trying too hard. The bathroom had where's Waldo above the urinal, and apparently a full length mirror in the women's stall. The waiter was very difficult to understand; he mumbled a fair amount, and didn't seem to know the menu. Maybe he was new?
We ordered wine (Malbec) and a zero proof flaming punch (juice on ice). The alcohol menu is 4-5 pages, whereas the food menu is 1 page.
We had oysters, and the fromage to start. The cheese was fine, spread on crackers. From there we shared the (very large) duck breast, and sides of dauphinoise (potatos) and of spaetzle.
The dauphinoise was cheesy and tasty. The mushrooms with the spaetzle were good. The duck breast was chewy. We did like the pickled radish.
We definitely had enough to eat but I think there are much better restaurants in Winnipeg, and because the ambiance was kind of gross, I can't imagine...
