I've been going to this location for about 2 years but sadly have to change my star rating from 5 to 2.
While the barista's are always very kind, they hired a new barista who seems to have little to no training whatsoever, and was not being monitored by anyone more experienced.
The barista who made my cappuccino did so by pouring some milk into the cup before any espresso, put the espresso in, and then topped off the beverage with a pour that was way too fast and did not develop any microfoam whatsoever. The beverage the barista made before that was also done in a similar manner. While I do not expect some barista championship level latte art or consistency, the very basic fundamentals of making a cappuccino (especially a cappuccino from a third wave cafe such as Thom Bargen) were not properly executed. I understand that cafes with high traffic may need to occasionally cut corners, such as using the same steamed milk for multiple beverages or not being overly obsessive with preparing the espresso, but the process I witnessed was not one of those cases - it was plain incompetence.
I feel terrible writing this review because I always loved going here. I know for a fact there are many highly skilled baristas and maybe I just witnessed an off day, but I really hope that all new baristas are taught at least the basic fundamentals of making espresso drinks and monitored for quality assurance for at least a couple of weeks.
With all of that said, I do still think this place is worth going to, and it's not like I was served anything I couldn't drink, but for a third wave specialty cafe with really good beans and usually very skilled baristas, it is a shame to experience such a downgrade in the...
Read moreThe coffee shop has a serene atmosphere and the one I tend to go to have plants, which makes it a tranquil sanctuary during winter. The music selection is also calming and I often Shazam songs. The lattes are pretty good, and their sandwiches are AMAZING. I do not think I have ever had better sandwiches with the exception of maybe one from Stella's. I love their latte selection and the staff are nice and friendly. I give it 4/5 because it is not an uncommon experience for the staff to get the drink order wrong. It has happened to me and friends I know who have gone there, and there seems to be a struggle if you ask for an iced latte drink. They are usually very good if you bring it up and will generally give a friend's and family discount or remake it free of charge. It can just be a bit tiresome sometimes. I do not suspect I am the problem just because I frequent other local coffee shops who have never gotten my order wrong, and the fact that I know people who have noted this place gets their order wrong.
Otherwise, again, lovely baristas, very sweet people, the music selection is also nice. I recommend it for the atmosphere and if you can get a sandwich, one of their special baked gifts, and a uniquely flavored latte, it...
Read moreThis is the best coffee spot in all of Winnipeg and you can’t change my mind. For the last 2 years I’ve been on the hunt to find the best cappuccino in all of Manitoba. I rate it off of three things,
Consistency. Tastes the same every. Single… Time..they have a rotation of baristas and they all make the perfect drink every time.
Price. Extremely reasonable.
Flavour. It’s smooth, tasteful, creamy and everything what you want in the perfect espresso.
Aside from the perfect cappuccino, they offer a variety of crafted drinks and fresh baked goods both with seasonal ingredients. My partner who does not drink coffee enjoys their London fog, he would say it’s best in the city as well.
Although I have never dined it, I am sure it’s great. Variety of seating options, creative cues, greenery, tasteful music and the sweet smell of baking.
Please do me a favour, and stop by Thom Bargen next time you are...
