Writing food review is fraught with perils as everyone has distinct preferences. What tastes great for one person may taste average or even repugnant for another. As a rule, I do not write food review. I'm taking a leap today with the idea of perhaps helping fellow travelers make a decision regarding whether this place is worth a visit.
During this visit, my wife and I ordered the signature spicy crab along with a couple of other dishes. This review is about the crab and the restaurant in general. The other two dishes are underwhelming but this place is known for its crab dishes.
When it comes to food, price is a key consideration. The maxim 'you get what you pay for' typicality holds up in my own experience sampling food all over the world. While some times there are bargains to be had, those are exceptions rather than the rules.
The small crab costs $480 HKD at this place. The weight was not disclosed by the server but it's definitely under one pound based on my eye test.
Given the cost, my expectation is that the crab should taste divine. Unfortunately, I was solely disappointed.
The only positive thing I can say about the crab is that it appears to be relatively fresh, which means it hasn't been previously frozen. The seasoning is crispy and salty but not particularly flavorful. The main idea behind the cooking method, which is also the name of the restaurant, is to infuse flavor of the seasonings into the carb meat. On that front, this place failed miserably. Other than the natural flavor, there is no other flavor in the crab meat. If natural flavor is what I'm after, I'd be much better off having streamed crabs as the crab is overcooked here.
Other factors that contributed to the low rating are: The place is dirty; The wait staff is extremely inattentive; The rest room is atrocious; A plate of awful tasting peanuts costs $30 HKD which was served without any warning that it is not complimentary; A 10% service fee is charged even though there is no service to speak of.
I'll never see foot in this place again even if the...
Read moreIn general I hate giving 1 star reviews. My hotel was near this place I saw it probably 6 times, looked it up and saw the reviews that were probably less than average and decided to try it anyway. Should a thought twice! The wait staff were definitely the rudest I've ever seen. I was shown my seat and someone else came by about 5 minutes later and literally threw menus in my direction. Just after someone came thru with a cart to buss tables with and knocked this kid in his chair seated at another table so hard he fell off his seat, no sorry just a scornful look from the guy with the cart picks the kids chair up and positions it out of his path and carries on. I saw a different server move a chair while someone was sitting on it eating lol. The staff eventually took my order. I wanted the crab, which said market price on the menu. They informed me the spicy crab is currently $480 HKD. You gotta be out of your dam mind. Whatever, I wanted it and said ok. I'm by myself, so kept entertained on my phone and suddenly realized I've been there for well over an hour. I flagged the person who took my order and she was immediately surprised that I didn't have my food. Where did it go? I have no idea. There were 4 waiters fighting amongst themselves, I guess my food went to another table. No one ever said sorry, or explained. I go to the manager up front and am like look, I just want to leave, no crab. He charged me $50 HKD for my time spent there occupying a table and drinking their water. Whatever I paid it just to leave. The place is a mess. I would look on Yelp, the are better rated places try them and...
Read moreGave this place a shot....where do I start. Though the flavors are great, the quality of food is absolutely horrible. I found out abt this place from these "foodies/bloggers" who recommended them. To much of my disappointment and my instincts, I should have known better as these hipster "foodies" have no clue what they're talking about and throw in complex words to make themselves sound like they know what they're talking about. Firstly, I dare say that 95% of "food bloggers" have no clue what they're on about and probably have never worked in a kitchen. So, to the real reason this places gets a 1 star....
It's a tourist trap!!!!! Over priced and over hyped for the price you pay. They obviously cater to the people who don't know any better.
The crabs aren't fresh and are old. Anyone who knows their way around a kitchen knows that what u crack a crab or lobster etc...if the meat is stuck against the shell itself, you already know it's old crab. This means quantity over quality.
The price is ridiculous. For Hong Kong standards, I payed $174AUD for 1 crab (2nd to the smallest size they have), suckling pig, Kalyan (Chinese broccoli), pipi's (clams) and 2 bowls of rice. Even to Australian standards of pricing....that's considered robbery.
Again, I reiterate that for the price they charge for a low quality old crab is ridiculous. Mind u the flavors they use is nice in terms of taste...in which they're smart to do this to mask the poor quality of crustacean used. This is utter trickery to most ppl and "foodies".
My suggestion, find another place for...
