A nice looking hotel in a bit of a sketchy part of Hong Kong. I stayed with my family on a trip recently and learned very quickly that Wan Chai is not the best part of Hong Kong for families to stay. Upon exiting the MTR station, you realize that you're not in the best part of town. We never felt in danger of our lives, but it's quite clear that this is the part of town where sketchy activities and transactions occur. The hotel sticks out like a sore thumb because of how nice it is compared to everything else around it. Just Google 'Wan Chai Hong Kong' to learn everything you need to know about the area.
On a separate note about the location - It's less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel to the Wan Chai MTR station, which allows for quick, cheap, and easy navigation around the city.
The staff is nice for the most part. At check-in, we were greeted by the Concierge, Paul, who was incredibly helpful and accommodating. Paul was extremely personable and friendly throughout the entirety of our stay. We originally booked for one night, but then decided to stay for a second night. When we went to the front desk for the second night's stay, we were helped by a male front desk employee who was less than helpful. The lobby was empty as it was quite early and when we approached him and asked how he was doing, he sighed and said it was very busy, which was weird. We were then helped by a female front desk agent, Amila, who was great. While getting us squared away for our second night, she offered us great tips and advice on what places to visit.
The optional breakfast buffet that is offered for a marginal charge and definitely worth it. Some of the items offered are: hash browns, egg omelette station, cereals, sausage, bacon, salad, fruits, meats, coffees, and juices.
We unfortunately ended the stay on a sour note, with the male front-desk employee telling us we owed $200 HKD and asking how we would like to settle the charge. I asked what the $200 HKD charge was for and he said it was for the breakfast that we ate. Thankfully, I had a screenshot of my hotel reservation which showed that I paid for a room with breakfast included. Once I showed him this screenshot, he told us "not to worry about it". Both times we interacted with this employee during our stay could be summed up as flat-out weird. It seemed like he didn't know how to have a normal interaction with people, which is strange working in hospitality.
Pros: Most of the employees, Paul and Amila included The breakfast
Cons: The location The value of the room rates The one male front...
Read moreNovotel Hong Kong Century is located in the Wan Chai area, about a 10-minute walk from the Wan Chai MTR station, making it convenient for travel. The hotel is also surrounded by many famous restaurants and is not far from Central, a major business district in Hong Kong.
We arrived at the hotel around 7 PM using an airport transfer booked through Trip.com. The hotel lobby was busy with many tourists, and we could hear live music from AK’s bar + lounge, located on the mezzanine level between the lobby and the main restaurant, “Le Café.” Check-in was quick, and the staff welcomed us warmly while explaining membership benefits.
The hotel is quite old, but the public areas have been renovated and well-maintained, making them look clean and modern. Our room was small and a bit outdated, but it didn’t have a musty carpet smell like other older hotels we’ve stayed in. The room had an air purifier, and there were also purifiers in the hallway, keeping the air fresh. The bathroom was compact compared to newer hotels but functional. The amenities included pump-style soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from Novotel’s signature brand, Deep Nature, which had a relaxing aroma—perfect for unwinding after a full day of sightseeing.
In the evening, we visited the hotel’s executive lounge. It was smaller than other Novotel lounges we’ve been to, but we really liked it. It felt cozy, like sitting in a small living room with friends, chatting and sipping drinks. The food selection was limited, mostly finger foods to go with drinks. Beverage options included beer, wine, liquor, and soft drinks—just enough to relax after a long day of exploring before dinner.
Later, we used our welcome drink vouchers at AK’s bar + lounge. The atmosphere was chill and relaxing. We enjoyed our drinks while looking out at Stewart Road at night, which was much quieter compared to the daytime when it’s crowded with both tourists and locals.
Breakfast had a great variety, including an egg station, pastries, fresh fruits, milk, yogurt, local dishes, Western food, and fresh coffee, tea, and juice. The food was delicious and made with good-quality ingredients.
The hotel’s fitness center and swimming pool were small but sufficient for a workout when away from home.
Overall, we were very happy with our stay at Novotel Hong Kong Century. It was worth the price, with a great location in a business and tourist area, making travel easy. Plus, there were plenty of well-known restaurants nearby. If we visit Hong Kong again, this hotel would be a top choice, especially for ALL...
