A traditional Cypriot lunch near Selimiye Mosque – Saraba Restaurant, Nicosia (June 2023)

During our June 2023 visit to Nicosia (Lefkoşa), we enjoyed lunch at Saraba Restaurant, located right next to the historic Selimiye Mosque—formerly the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, now under restoration and unfortunately not visible during our visit.

The restaurant offers a lovely garden setting and a menu full of traditional Cypriot flavors. We chose a selection including a plate of meaty molehiya, a mixed platter with zucchini flower dolma (6 pieces), stuffed grape leaves (2 pieces), Cypriot kofta (4 pieces), and salad, alongside a plate of bulgur and vermicelli rice with salad, fresh lemonade, a plate of honey katmer, and two cups of tea.

The bill came to 550 Turkish Lira, which was quite high compared to what we paid at Niazi’s in Kyrenia, but the food was delicious enough that we took...

Bit of a rip. Food is okay. They insisted the place was open to dine, and then rushed us out after 25 mins before we even finished eating. The “lemonade” is literal cordial, don’t bother. I wouldn’t bother with the halloumi salad either. Dishes are underwhelming for the price. Olives are garlic bombs. The staff and owner are nice but just to the extent of completing the money grab. Wir hatten das große Glück, dieses außergewöhnliche Restaurant in Lefkoşa zu entdecken – und was soll ich sagen? Es war einfach fantastisch! Die Gerichte waren nicht nur unglaublich lecker, sondern schmeckten, als wären sie direkt aus Omas oder Mamas Küche auf unseren Tisch gezaubert worden. Einheimische Küche in ihrer authentischsten und köstlichsten Form!

Die herzliche Chefin begrüßte uns persönlich und nahm sich die Zeit, uns bestens zu beraten. Man spürt, mit wie viel Leidenschaft sie diesen Ort seit 23 Jahren führt (Stand März 2025). Und das Ergebnis? Eine Küche, die nicht nur satt, sondern glücklich macht! Wir haben verschiedene Gerichte probiert – jedes war auf seine Weise einzigartig, sodass wir unmöglich einen Favoriten bestimmen konnten.

Neben dem herausragenden Essen verdient auch die Location volle fünf Sterne! Das Restaurant liegt in einem wunderschönen historischen Gebäude, mit einer tollen Atmosphäre sowohl drinnen als auch draußen im malerischen Hof. Es ist nicht nur ein Restaurant, sondern eine kulinarische Institution in Nordzypern und eine echte Bereicherung für Lefkoşa.

Auch das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist absolut fair – hier bekommt man echte Qualität und Authentizität. Wer die wahre nordzypriotische Küche erleben will, darf dieses Restaurant nicht verpassen!
