I had high hopes for Tonantzin, but unfortunately, my experience was underwhelming.
Starting with the Loaded Nachos, I was quite disappointed. The nachos themselves were overly salty, and for the price, there simply weren’t enough toppings to justify the cost. The mince was just okay—not terrible, but it had peas in it, which felt out of place and didn’t complement the dish well. On the bright side, the salsa was great, with a nice moderate spice that added some much-needed flavor.
The tacos were another letdown. The Pollo taco was almost completely unseasoned, making it quite bland. The Al Pastor tacos had potential, as the meat itself was decent, but they barely included any pineapple—just a tiny sliver, which wasn’t enough to balance the flavors. For what they charge, I expected better.
As for the atmosphere, it was nothing special—just a standard, unremarkable dining space. Service was quick, which I appreciated, but I found it a bit stingy that they only provided one napkin per person. It felt like a small thing, but it added to the overall sense that the restaurant wasn’t offering great value for money.
Overall, Tonantzin didn’t live up to expectations. The food was mediocre, the portions and quality didn’t justify the price, and the small details (like seasoning and portion sizes) made a difference. I...
Read moreIf you crave authentic Mexican food (an none of that Western restaurant/franchise) look no further! The owner, who is there, is absolutely fantastic, polite and a positive type of person who will offer her suggestions to make your first experience memorable. The food itself is SO good you will surely come back more than once. Make sure to order the birria tacos (that come in a soup to dip in) and the Pastor tacos. Even if you want just some nachos with drinks, this place will satisfy your craving as it offers variations of this dish. We were serviced by an absolute humble and polite staff member and even though he was new, he kept tending to our/was never far to service us. Really like that about business owners that will give people a chance of employment and make their staff feel comfortable as they would do their guests! The place is small/intimate and well decorated to offer am amazing night out. Can't provide any photos because as soon as everything came we just devoured them but next time, and the time after that, and the one after that, and...will just keep going! Prices are as much as one would pay at any other restaurant out (with drinks) but the taste/quality/hospitality is like nowhere...
Read moreTonantzin is the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant in Nicosia! Owned by a true Mexicana, I can't imagine you can get any closer to the true taste and essence of Mexican cuisine, in Nicosia and in Cyprus in general. The flavors are amazing, especially the carnitas tacos and the chili con carne nachos, which you get plenty of! They also serve traditional yummy drinks. Some of them, they don't always have in stock cause, as the owner told us, they bring most of the ingredients from Mexico and sometimes they are short on stock. The owner is the friendliest and most helpful person ever and she has a very very strong memory I must say! We've only been there two times and the second time we went she remembered me from my rings! We ended up talking about our cats after that. She makes you feel right at home both with her restaurant flavors and her personality. The place is small but cozy and it's decorated appropriately to remind you of Mexico but not in a bad folkloric way. For the summer, they also have some tables out on the street. Do yourself a favor and try the real Mexican experience right in the...
