Covered in rain, and cold as heck, I took a chance on this place. They had menus outside, with (thankfully) English decriptions underneath the Czech.
Went inside and asked if English was ok and was greeted with impressive English in return. Asked if I could get food and was told to find a seat. Great!
So I took a look at the menu and instantly went for the soup of the day to get warm. I didn't care. Just warm. So thankfully when I was told that there was no soup of the day I didn't care when they told me the Garlic soup was still available instead. The soup came in quick time as well as the recommended beer. Good start. Warm and human again.
Then it came to the main. I chose something I will never be able to pronouncce, but it was a mix of Chicken, Salami, Peppers, Potato and cheese. I thought there would probably be more veg than meat but I was wrong. I was sincerely defeated by this meal. Three attemps I took at it, and one of them was approaching by supprise. But alas, I failed to complete the mission.
Conclusion being..... I don't know how authentic this is not knowing the culinary history of Chechia. What I can tell you is that I hadn't had a meal in ten hours worth of walking around Prague, and I had just been rained on and was feeling cold, wet and dishevelled, and I took a chance on a place that looked inviting and seemed to have authentic food. I came away incredibly full, and having had a really nice experience. Prices are good. Staff are friendly and good with English. Beer is nice. I'd go back in a heartbeat, but trying to learn from my previous experience. By the way, they put the weight of the food on the menu....
Read moreI do no recommend this place: we were waiting for our food for over an hour when the waitress informed that the kitchen lost our order (besides us there were only 2 other tables to serve at this period, so they were not bus’s at all). She apologised and offer some kind of liquor- which we considered as a professional handling of the situation. The unprofessional and not service oriented approach just came after this: we had to wait another 30 minutes to prepare our food. We ordered only 3 items out of which they managed to prepare 2 as we asked the third meal was supposed to be a simple schnitzel from chicken with French fries - instead of which we managed to get pork schnitzel with potato salad, which we gave back, we were offered to prepare the right order, but we did not want to wait anymore, so we split what we got as we were already quite hungry and we’re told that they not charging for the wrong order we have back. When we got the invoice in the end ( all in Czech) we assumed that they do not charge this item, as we do not speak Czech we just paid- later on when we checked the invoice in details with the help of Google translate we notice that they charged the item we sent back… after we told this to the other waiter as or waitress disappeared we got our money back. if you would like to get good food with nice service I do not recommend this...
Read moreI used to go there regularly (I live and work in the neighborhood), even though the food was getting more and more expensive. One Saturday Summer in 2011, I went there with my family (including 2 small children) before noon, in order to have lunch, before smoking people come. The waiter was extremely rude, pretending that he does not understand anything (although we speak Czech quite well) and we had to ask several times for the lunch menu. After that, the food we got was absolutely terrible! Perhaps the waiter brought some stuff at least one week old, not edible at all.
From that time on, I tell all my colleagues (working in the Math Institute of The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) not to go there. I hope that the restaurant ``U Sumavy" will finally lost all their customers. I finally decided to write this review, because I am still angry with this...
