The monument to the writer Vítězslav Hálek was made in 1882 by artistic society called "Umělecká beseda" and was created by the sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch. The place in the northern part of Charles Square near the New Town Hall was provided free of charge by the Municipal Council of the Royal Capital City of Prague and a public collection was organized for the making of the monument. Hálek's bust rests on a prismatic pedestal - a fountain surrounded by two resting places, finished with sphinxes. Vítězslav Hálek was born on April 5, 1835 in Dolínek near Mělník and died on October 8, 1874 in Prague. He was a Czech poet, novelist, playwright, literary critic and publicist.
