La Feuille D'or — Restaurant in Épernay

I wish we had read the revieuws before we went in. The food is horrible, waitress friendly, wine decent. If anybody has tasted the same food and considers it 5 stars, that must be family of the owners or someone expecting a roadside truck stop restaurant (and even than it’s disappointing). I truly hope the chef was ill, this was a disgraceful display and a complete lack of love for food. Let me elaborate:

1. SALT. A zip of water from the sea is less salty than the sauces and steak (Cote de boeuf).
2. Not fresh: appetizers for example seemed deep fried, a chicken dish was completely dry (expecting it to have been frozen), the sauce seemed to have been warmed in the microwave (it had a thin darkish film over it that disappears when stirring).
3. Absolutely a complete absence of refinement and effort. For example: the starter and the main course had the same “salad”, which was plain lettuce with shaved carrot and some strong sauce. The steak that I returned and was replaced had a different level of cooking (second time more rare than medium - though the waitress nicely asked), and clearly showed there is no eye for e.g. a core temperature...

Worst restaurant food ever.

Unimaginary microwaved dishes served in rapid succesion. Not sure what was my ‘favorite’. The steak that so salty that it made my eyes watter and instantly dry at the same time, the very questionable combination of a squid filled with bacon or the chicken that was so dry, I was not sure whether it was the skin or the actual feathers I was eating.

The waitress was charming and accomodating, but her kindness could not overshadow the lack of love, taste and any form of refinement coming out of the kitchen.

Wow I am impressed about the way people can ruïn their food. But the chef of this place definately is qualified to do so. We ordered several dishes to start with, like a pastry with codfish inside and a salad. Well, my cats litter box even looks more inviting. And then the main course: chicken. Can you go wrong with chicken? Oh yes especially when it's deepfried and cooked in the microwave. Waitress is friendly, and actually she has to if she wants to have a small change to get tipped.
