Restaurant Du Guesclin — Restaurant in Avranches

We (four of us) really enjoyed eating here. It was our first wedding anniversary, so I wrote to the restaurant months early for a reservation. I put it in my calendar. We show up at dinner time and wham the place is full and the owner tells me we don't have a reservation and they're full. I threw a tantrum. Clearly, I don't look like things are well to the other patrons and I won't leave the owner alone. She relents and puts us at one of the only two empty tables in the entire restaurant and this one is facing the street, not the bay. NO PROBLEM. Really, I have no idea what happened with the communication. I don't remember if I used my old email or whether I went through one of the restaurant reservation sites. What I was clear about was that I had a reservation, and we were not to be denied.

To the credit of the owner, she was just as clear that she had no email record and that I must be wrong. However, she did seat us, and we had a GREAT TIME. We had the full dinner menu. Each having different entrees and plats. We drank and we really enjoyed ourselves.

I want to thank the owner for trusting that I was telling her the truth and that I really did contact the restaurant in advance. I know she had no such record.

La seule chose qui mérite vraiment d'être soulignée dans ce restaurant, c'est la vue, qui est tout simplement magnifique. C'était, de loin, la meilleure partie de notre expérience. Malheureusement, tout le reste a été décevant.

Dès notre arrivée, nous avons dû attendre devant la porte sans qu'aucun serveur ne nous accueille. J'ai fini par aller moi-même chercher quelqu'un pour demander une table. Le serveur, visiblement fatigué et peu motivé, nous a finalement installés à une table qui était sale. En plus, alors que tout le monde avait une nappe en tissu, il nous a posé une simple nappe en papier, ce qui nous a fait nous interroger sur un éventuel préjugé ou un manque d'attention, peut-être parce qu'ils manque 2h pour fermer.

Le service était extrêmement lent. Nous avons attendu près de 20 minutes avant même de pouvoir commander quoi que ce soit. Et une fois la nourriture arrivée, c'était la déception totale : les moules étaient trop cuites, probablement restées dans l'eau chaude toute la journée. Malgré cela, j'ai tout mangé parce que j'avais vraiment faim, mais le goût était loin d'être agréable.

Le service était tout simplement impitoyable. Les plats étaient posés sur la table de manière négligée, comme si on servait des animaux. À aucun moment, nous n'avons eu l'impression que le personnel se souciait de notre expérience. De plus, une autre cliente a signalé que son sac avait été volé, ce qui met en évidence un manque total de surveillance dans l'établissement.

Le vin, heureusement, était bon, mais c'est un vin en bouteille, donc il n'y a pas grand-chose à ajouter sur ce point. Il n'y avait aucune ambiance musicale, seulement le bruit des enfants qui pleuraient et des conversations sans fin, ce qui rendait l'atmosphère pesante.

Pour couronner le tout, chaque étape du repas a été interminable : nous devions constamment chercher ou appeler quelqu'un pour continuer notre repas ou demander l'addition. Au final, je préfère de loin acheter un sandwich et une bouteille de vin pour m'installer devant le paysage plutôt que de retourner dans ce restaurant.

Je ne reviendrai pas, c'est certain.

Despite what Google Maps says it was open 31/3/23. Seated on spec at 7.45pm Decor of faded grey/pink glory just works though lighting is bright reducing ambience. Staff friendly, attentive and efficient. Formule gives good options for price, 4 or 5 choices for both starter and main. Moules and Salad starter simple, flavoursome and of good size. Salmon and Lamb (not pré salē) mains both tasty with excellent sauces - veg generally excellent although my boiled potatoes a little undercooked. Carafe of house white well priced and very drinkable and only place I have seen on island that offers this? Ice cream delicious, 3 chocolate cake tasty and light. Very enjoyable...
