Le Jardin Pêcheur — Restaurant in Bordeaux

LANGUAGE BARRIER We chose to eat here knowing about the abilities of the staff as my wife works with adults with physical and learning disabilities. However we immediately came up against an awkward language barrier even though my wife can speak basic French, it was obvious none of the staff could speak English, even though we were told they could. The menu listing for a main fish course was not presented as stated although we made one minor change (chips instead of gnocchi) and the included accompaniments were not served (vegetables and sauce). We had eaten the meal by the time the missing items arrived. The most upsetting part of the meal was the waiter coming up to my wife with a phone translation explaining about the staff in the restaurant which we already knew and my wife works with disabled adults, we felt we were being judged. However we were extremely shocked to see the chef making physical gestures at us through the outside window, completely unneccessary! Everything came down to the language barrier. Servers are polite and gentile but the restaurant food should be avoided. I ordered monkfish (lotte) and they gave me salmon ... only after I received the dish did they tell me that there was no monkfish today. I promptly sent the dish back (to their surprise) and then ordered a steak, cooked rare, which proceeded to take 30 minutes to reach my table. It became clear then that the problem is in the kitchen - which did not communicate to the waitstaff of the changes. The steak was super low grade and cooked inconsistently to the extreme of rare on one side and medium well on the other. The one redemption was the wine as to be expected. L'établissement est de bon aloi, avec une belle décoration et un mobilier confortable. Le personnel est sympathique, plein de bonne volonté et nous a donné l'impression de faire de son mieux.

Toutefois, nous n'avons pas été spécialement emballé. Nous étions quatre, dont trois à vouloir le burger au saumon, mais ce plat n'était plus à la carte, du moins le saumon avait été remplacé par du poisson pané. Nous l'avons pris par défaut. C'était bon, mais pas transcendant, je pense que cela aurait été meilleur avec le saumon. L'un de nous a pris du thon mi-cuit, malheureusement un trop cuit, tandis que l'un de nos burgers était tiède. C'es dommage, parfois ça se joue à pas grand chose. Et pourtant notre serveur soutenait qu'ils veillaient à s'appliquer sur ce point.

Évoquons le prix, le défaut majeur à nos yeux. La qualité générale des plats, bien que satisfaisante, ne coïncide pas avec les tarifs pratiqués. Nous en avons eu en moyenne entre 40-45 euros par personne. Les plats correspondraient plus à une brasserie tandis que les prix s'approchent d'un restaurant à la cuisine plus sophistiquée. Pour être plus précis, 20 euros pour un burger, ça fait cher quand d'autres établissements sur Bordeaux proposent facilement 5 euros de moins, avec plus de choix. Petit bémol enfin sur la carte des vins, peu fournie, notamment en blanc, alors que la thématique du restaurant porte sur la mer. Un entre-deux-mers aurait été bienvenu par exemple.

En somme, rien de rédhibitoire, mais rien de bien enthousiasmant. Nous étions curieux de découvrir ce lieu, et nous sommes repartis mitigés. Saluons néanmoins l'effort porté sur l'embauche, car le restaurant a une démarche sociale et inclusive avec du personnel en situation de handicap. Bon à savoir pour qui cherche à soutenir ce type...
