While in Bordeaux for the holidays my wife & I stopped in for dinner after doing a quick search of the area for a place that took online reservations.
We had walked by this restaurant multiple times in our stay and the curb appeal is not exactly warm and gripping, but the reviews of the food and price are what drew us in. We made a reservation for an early dinner seating, around 715p and arrived a bit early. The restaurant staff were still setting up so we went for a brief walk before being warmly welcomed in to sit.
The staff was very friendly and helped us navigate the menu via the QR code and took our order promptly. The menu was priced so well I originally thought it was a mistake. We started with a liter (A liter?!) of house red wine that was cheaper than every bottle on the menu, it was delicious!
I had steak frites and my wife had breaded turkey. Both meals blew our expectations out of the water, both perfectly seasoned & cooked to our specifications. The fries were fresh and hot and also seasoned perfectly. We finished off with a slice of basque cake with some gelato, the perfect sweet treat to complement all of the savory we had just enjoyed.
The restaurant quickly filled up with both tourist and locals alike, with a warm setting & very friendly & prompt staff, checking on us often and offering recommendations on food.
Our initial impression of this restaurant based on it's look and decor (had some flags from what I imagine was hold over from Rugby world cup decorations, a last supper artwork, a tv playing a very random mix of music) were that this would not be an enjoyable experience, but we were very happily mistaken! The staff & food very much exceeded our expectations and we agreed that this was one of our best meals of our 2+ weeks in Bordeaux. Compliments to the chef & their team, we will most certainly be back upon our return trips...
Read moreUpdate : 6 years now we've been in Bordeaux, and this is still one of our favorite places to go! The service is always kind and gracious, and the food is always fantastic! The confit de canard is excellent (my favorite dish here!), the escargots are a lovely garlicky adventure, and the gâteau Basque is a perfect finish to the meal.
We love introducing our visiting friends to Bordeaux by bringing them here.
Thank you, as always! Wonderful food, a charming setting, and warm, friendly owners. Le Vieux Chaudron has become a local favorite for my wife and me. The confit de canard is a favorite of mine, and we've never been able to pass up their amazing...
Read moreBefore leaving Bordeaux, I want to leave comments for the best French restaurant we tried here (Yeah that’s how much we love it🙂🙂). We ordered Foie gras and snail as starters, both were so perfectly cooked. The bread to go with Foie Gras is freshly toasted with spices and hot to melt the paste. We have duck confit as main and it is one of the best dishes, the skin was toasted crispy and meat is very flavoured. The service here was amazing as well, staffs speak good English and willingly help on our questions. My phone was dead and she was helpful to keep it at the till to charge it. Price was also fair for food. It...
