We really enjoyed our short visit to Le Cachotier in the centre of Carcassone. For 3 or 4 days before visiting Carcassonne we had repeatedly mentioned having a simple lunch of onion soup, yet the 2 or 3 small towns that we visited prior to arriving in Carcassonne simply didn't have anywhere that offered soup.

So as we wandered into the old main square and the first chalkboard that we saw was outside Le Cachotier, with a simple offering...€13 for onion soup or €15 for onion soup with a glass of house red wine; simple and not cheap, but just what we were looking for.

We didn't want a large meal, we wanted something simple and warming. And it was exactly that.

The ladies who served us were so friendly and pleasant. The atmosphere, whilst loud at times was really good. We found the bar and restaurant to be very clean, well laid out, with a patio area in the main square, seating inside on both the ground and first floor as well as a covered garden area to the rear. The toilets were very clean.

We'd definitely visit here again. Oh yes the soup, with cheese and a large piece of bread, exactly as you'd expect your bowl of piping hot French onion soup to be served. So yes, a really relaxing visit. No airs and graces, just simple food done well, accompanied by a glass of fruit red wine.

Level 10 Google reviewer with over 1,200 reviews with 2 million views plus 14,000 photos with more than 60 million views and still going strong 💪.

My reviews aren't sponsored, they're based on mine, and often my wife's experience at an establishment whether that be a shop, restaurant, service or activity, with the aim of highlighting great service plus areas for improvement, if necessary. And boy sometimes it is necessary.

We had dinner at Le Cachotier last night, and it was delicious! Wish they had an option to book table on the website or Google as you have to call for reservations, and my French isn’t that good. We ordered the prix fixe $39e menu, and we were very happy, for the most part. The garden is beautiful and magical, and the hostess (owner?) charming. We were even talking about eating here again for our second night! The first two courses were absolutely delicious (gravelax with citron reduction, poisson of the day which also turned out to be salmon, and mushroom ravioli), but we didn’t get water or bread until well into the first course, and unfortunately the evening completely fell apart at the end, when the dessert course never came. After waiting 25 minutes and realizing they were closing up, I had to ask someone (in my bad French) if the desserts were coming. He looked surprised and asked what we ordered. I said the chocolate one (a pear tartelette with chocolate croustillant praline & mascarpone vanilla). After 5 minutes or so, he brought us something else, and I didn’t catch what he said (they spoke very fast), but the last thing was “perdue” which means “lost”. So apparently our dessert order got lost. We ate some of the dessert, which was a rich caramel chocolate pot de crème, but it was much too sweet and not what we ordered, so we didn’t finish it. Anyway we definitely recommend the food, but maybe don’t go at the end of the night on a Sunday, or when they are...

Great meal and a very beautiful location. Try the seasonal fish dish!

Parmesan Gnocchi for children is also delicious.

I found the chicken tenders for children and my duck breast good, but in my opinion, both and especially the potatoes served as a side would deserve some kind of sauce.

The service in general was gentle, however I was a bit disappointed, about the fact, that I ordered „eau the table“ to go with the other drinks we had. The waitress then asked „still or sparkling“ as I wanted the normal tap water, I answered still. Result was: they served us a large bottle of Evian.

When I confronted them when I payed, they first acted as if they did not understand me then it seemed like they would somehow correct it on the bill, but ultimately did not do so.

Sorry for not tipping this time! And for other foreigners: I do recommend this restaurant because of the beautiful location and good food. But please do not make the same mistake. If you order „eau the table“ and they ask you which way you would like it, answer „seulement une...
