My fiancée and I stayed in Cannes for vacation during the last days of August and the first two days of September and, after going out amidst the atrocious heat we decided to go back to the apartment we were staying at. While making plans for what we were gonna visit and were we would have had dinner during the evening of our first day we came across of the Black Sails pirate tavern so we called them to make a reservation and upon asking if we could be sat near the pirate skeleton we were met with a very friendly laughter from the chef who then booked our table for the night. When we arrived we were met with the amazing sight of a true pirate tavern in its full glory: skeletons, rhum, stuffed monkeys, cannons, doubloons, pirate flags, exotic birds and plants, ropes, paintings, barrels, candles, a scale pirate ship, an enormous helm and a treasure chest full of pirate-themed board games! We were able to take some pictures with the full approval of the chef, who recommended us to make sure to tell him and the staff if they would have come out in the pictures so they would pose. Now on to our dinner! The chef recommended my fiancée a blanche beer that I also tried and that we enjoyed a lot. Our order consisted of the "Catnip Burger", their gourmet vegan white bun burger, that my fiancée ordered because she can't digest meat very well, and the "O'Malley's Pleasure", a main course of duck breast and sweet potatoes fries that I ordered becaue I wanted to try one of their sliced meat cuts. Needless to say, the duck breast of the Black Sails is the best meat I have ever eaten in my entire life and my fiancée can say the same about the gourmet vegan burger knowing how much she loved it! The atmosphere was magnificent and the need to try the Catnip Burger was growing in me so I decided to order it as well as I also don't digest burger meat very well. While waiting for it the chef personally handed us, kindly and very warmingly saying that they were on the house, two shots of delicious rhum that we were delighted to taste, as well as an appetizer of onion rings; the burger finally came and I absolutely agree with my fiancée about the fact that the burger tasted like actual meat despite not having any inside of it and the cheddar was the cherry on top. Nearing the end of our dinner, we were extremely full and before heading out and then back to our apartment we got treated, again, to another shot of an even stronger rhum on the house, which left us very satisfied as the last treat of our night. An absolutely unique experience to if you...
Read moreThis is a five star for this restaurant in Cannes and certainly deserves a sixth one !! Because of the welcoming? Because of the full home made menu? Because of this crazy decor of pirate ship? Naaa!! Simply because it is the best burger I have ever tasted in my life!! Each time I travel, I am looking for the best burger… and this time I (my wife…) have definitely found it and by far! Ok, if I well remember, I ordered the most expensive… but what a choice! (Kiss on my hand) The bun, soft and tasty, the crunch of the topping… the unusual color! The sauce… ouhhh I want to come back… The cheddar slice and the steak-burger cooked perfectly… The potatoes… the seasoning… I realize that I don’t have enough vocabulary to describe and express what I experienced (of course, I’m French!) except making noise like “hmmm”… But what surprised me the most (be ready) is the salad dressing… I know the secret ingredient (after minutes of negotiations… they are nice pirates) but I won’t tell you! Otherwise they’ll make me walk the plank (not that nice finally…)! Yo Ho Captain!! Please do me a favor and move to Lyon!! No sea here but you definitely belong in the capital of...
Read moreBummed out to post this review given the restaurant’s 5 star rating, but this was pretty terrible. My burger was fine, if not a bit sauce heavy vs. meat flavor, but the burger served to my wife was just raw.
I eat rare steaks and I expect a nice burger to be around medium, but my wife’s burger was seared and that’s about it. We cut into it and it looked no different from ground beef at the grocery store. It’s 2024, so I am not all that concerned about food safety, but from a textural perspective eating raw ground beef is disgusting, and certainly not something to serve without request.
Stranger still, we were not the only ones with this issue while we were there. The French couple next to us sent one of their burgers back.
It’s unfortunate, because pirates are cool and burgers seemed like a fantastic break from nightly Michelin guide faire, but almost everything about this was a disappointment. It gets a 2 star instead of a 1 because my burger was at least decent and the chips are great.
Edit: Dropping it to 1 for the inaccurate response. We were not given a discount or...
