I first came here 30 years ago. I have lived in Paris for extended periods in my life. I have also been a share holder in several restaurants in different parts of the world. This was a classic traditional Paris restaurant. The steak was absolutely inedible. It was so tough a dog could not have eaten it. The response from the waiter was we should have ordered a more expensive steak completely missing the point any reputable restaurant would not sell inedible food. My challenge to get the chef to try and swallow the steak was dismissed. He claimed, falsely, that we had eaten 80% of the steak. We hadn't. It was 10%. His claim was that people came here to eat the steak was clearly false as the restaurant was 60% empty and the people there were tourists. Even with the 10% we tried to eat we could not swallow it and removed the chewed meat from our mouths and put it back on the plate. Halfway through the meal our half full bottle of wine came back frozen solid with no apology or concern. This used to be a very nice restaurant in a special location. Do NOT go here. The food is disgusting and the waiters exceed by a long way even the universally acknowledged indolence of Paris waiters. Take your custom elsewhere. There are many, many better restaurants in Paris and this place deserves to fail, which I am...
Read moreMa Bourgogne— for over a decade I've had an enduring love affair with their peerless steak tartare. For years, the legendary owners themselves prepared this quintessential dish. When I learned of their retirement, I feared for the future, wondering if the spirit of Ma Bourgogne would vanish, like so many Parisian treasures lost to time.
But rest easy: the new proprietor has achieved the near-impossible. The identity of the restaurant remains intact, the soul unblemished, while certain aspects—such as the delightfully antiquated "rude French" service—have been gently modernized, making it less a test of fortitude and more a true pleasure. Most importantly, the steak tartare, that singular glory of Parisian cuisine, is as exquisite as ever, reaffirming its place as the finest in the city.
To the new owner, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for success in this noble adventure. Rest assured, Ma Bourgogne will remain my pilgrimage site for that mandatory steak tartare, a dish that has become synonymous with my...
Read moreWe discovered this gem while on our way to Victor Hugo's home across the plaza. We made reservations for Wednesday night August 20, 2025. It was not busy with many tables available. The restaurant has a charming atmosphere with its antique furniture and low ceilings, and a strong emphasis on French cuisine complemented by excellent service.
I started with the escargot, served with fresh bread, and it was outstanding. Our waiter suggested a red wine that paired perfectly with the escargot. I also ordered the onion soup and the cheese plate, both of which were very good. For dessert, I enjoyed the mango sorbet and the hazelnut ice cream, and both were delicious.
The server was knowledgeable and patient, offering great suggestions without pressuring us to choose more expensive dishes or rush our meal. The plates came in perfect timing.
MA Bourgogne truly deserves five stars. I highly recommend this restaurant and plan to return on my next...
