A very nice dinner tonight. Quiet but cheerful and bright place. Friendly and attentive service. The chef/owner came out to ask people at individual tables about the food. The food was delicately flavored and very tasty. We had lunch at L'Arpege earlier - and so the immediate comparator for Rang could not possibly have been tougher. And yet, Rang scored well!
The presentation of each dish was far superior to most Indian restaurants. Of the 4 things we ordered, Palak Paneer (slices of paneer arranged diagnonally on top of the gravy as opposed to cubes interspersed within the pureed spinach), Hyderabadi baingan (eggplant sliced and stacked with the gravy around it), and Kashmiri Kofta (3 large koftas in the center on top of the gravy) especially stood out in their presentation. Dal also had a half cherry tomato and fresh cilantro on it, adding a nice touch!
The plain and garlic naans were thin and soft. The rice that came with the entrees was gently flavored with cumin - enough to make the flavor apparent but not so that it would overpower the taste of the entree.
Except for the two best Indian restaurants in Chicago that serve North Indian cuisine (Rooh and Indienne; and excluding the South India-focused A2B), Rang would top every other Indian restaurant in Chicago.
I would recommed...
Read moreI've been on the hunt for a place to go for actual authentic North Indian food in paris, and heard many things about Rang. The first thing my husband and I noticed is the price. It is on the higher end ($21 for a plat) and for some dishes, I can't justify paying that price like pav bhaji which is traditionally a street food. Also 5 euro for a samosa def is exorbitant. We ordered a dahi papdi chaat, biryani and a chicken methi malai. The papdi chaat was really good and the chutney brought the kick we were looking for. Now for the main dishes- the meat was lovely in both, and the biryani overall was good. We asked for an Indian level of spice which they delivered here. The chicken methi malai was a huge disappointment though. It lacked flavor, and just overwhelmingly tasted of the cream and not much more. Even my french husband agreed since he is used to eating indian food. The portion sizes also for the price are quite small. Im from NYC so I'm used to paying these prices, but you usually get much more. The decor and service is lovely. Overall, it def is better than quite a few here, but I wouldn't visit again, unless it's for the lunch menu where the prices are cheaper and therefore worth what you're getting. I left with a craving still unsatisfied and my husband,...
Read moreOne of the most unwelcome and unsurprising experiences. I made a reservation for a table, and when I arrived at the location, the lady who served seemed very affected, asking which table she should put me at given I was alone. What is the point of making a reservation in advance, and why is it such a huge hassle for these restaurants when they have a solo traveler? We are humans too, and we eat as well :)). Being an Indian restaurant, I had quite high expectations that the culinary experience would match. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. It’s a kind of scam for all the pretentious people who want to say they’ve eaten Indian food. The food is by no means truly flavorful; it’s just a joke. When I gave feedback at the end, the same lady told me that if I wanted it to be flavored, I should have asked for it to be spicy. That’s a joke; flavored does not mean spicy. Unfortunately, even that mango lassi was watered down; you could barely taste the mango, and it was terribly diluted with water. By far one of the most disappointing experiences in an Indian restaurant, and the money spent was wasted. I do not recommend it.
Later edit: Your reply is priceless, made me laugh 😆 I didn’t say the food was bad, I mentioned that you are far far away of providing...
