When visiting Saint Malo on a roadtrip of Britanny, I knew I could not leave the area without having a galette. Having read many excellent reviews of Crêperie Grain noir, I selected it as the dinner spot on my first night in the city.
Arriving at the restaurant around 8pm, we were informed that we would have to wait up to 30 minutes to find a table despite only being second in line. We were quickly joined by a much longer queue, and the busy atmosphere only added to my expectations.
We ended up only waiting 15 minutes, and having scouted the menu in line were quick to order. The galettes are reasonably priced, and tempted by dijon mustard, I opted to try their namesake special, complete with sausages, mustard and cheese. We also got a bottle of house cider to share, which was very palatable and a good pairing with the galettes.
Our galettes arrived quickly, full of a variety of toppings and combinations. Mine was good - but not particularly exceptional - with the mustard very pleasing with the savouriness of the sausages. I sampled three other galettes, a trout laden one and a classic ham, egg and cheese were good but also not spectacular. My favourite, by some distance, was a raw mushroom galette, which was crisp, savoury and dominated by an umami earthy flavour.
Whilst I was pleased, but not blown away by the galettes, the dessert crepes fell short. We ordered a flambe with calvados, and a chantilly chocolate, and two limp crepes failed to hit the spot. However, a spiced kir bretagne delighted, crisp and full of warm fall flavours. Overall, for a solid galette I definitely wouldn't look past Crêperie Grain noir, but it would be best to...
Read moreI understand, why people may have questions to the service: twice was nearby to place, twice it was fully packed with people and only one waiter (probably the owner) served and did everything: from taking/delivering orders to cleaning the tables.
Taking into account that this is creperie and orders are being prepared quite quickly, sometimes waiter is overwhelmed with high priority tasks and did not keeping the speed of events.
So, there should be something done to the process like more digitization, for example for payment / taking orders, or one more person for operations.
Moving back to food, one time we were able to seat here and enjoyed galettes here a lot, kit breton was also delicious.
In our case, waiter done great, but I saw how he was close to the edge.
So, it’s strong 8/10 and recommended...
Read moreVery nice crêperie. Organic and fresh ingredients. Short list of suggestions on the menu, but very good quality ingredients and flexible to add or remove ingredients. I enjoyed a simple but excellent galette with seaweed tartare for 5.50 Euros. The best is their "Nature" ciders (more than organic) . Especially the changing menu of ciders "à l'ancienne", made in respect of traditional methods, in small volumes, that is written on the black board and may vary from time to time. They have some dry or extra dry, some more fruity on the palate, some come with more acidity, some are rather bitterssweet or a balance of all this... And of course they can help with recommendations to suit your taste or make a good association with your...
