The Batumi Octopus, also known as Café Fantasy, is an architectural marvel located on the boulevard along the Black Sea in Batumi, Georgia. This unique coffeehouse was designed by Georgian architect George Chakhava and painter Zurab Kapanadze, and it was completed in 1975. The structure quickly became an iconic symbol of Batumi, drawing both locals and tourists with its distinct and whimsical design.

The café's architecture is particularly striking due to its resemblance to an octopus, with its eight arched openings and undulating form. The building is constructed with an iron gridshell structure, which gives it both strength and flexibility. This framework is coated with colorful mosaic pieces that add to its vibrant and fantastical appearance, making it a standout example of mosaic art.

Over the years, the Batumi Octopus has served as a popular meeting spot and a beloved landmark in the city. Its unique design and cultural significance have made it a point of interest for architecture enthusiasts and those interested in Soviet-era design. Despite its age, the café has retained its charm and continues to be a symbol of creativity and innovation in Batumi's architectural landscape.

In summary, the Batumi Octopus is more than just a coffeehouse; it is a work of art and a testament to the creative spirit that characterizes Batumi. Its blend of unique design and historical significance makes it a must-visit for anyone...

🦑 Batumi Octopus Cafe

Unique Design The building looks like a giant octopus! Very creative and fun. It catches your eye immediately and makes you want to check it out.

Great for Kids There’s a play area and the whole place feels like a small underwater world. Kids love the fountains, sculptures, and bright colors.

Ice Cream & Coffee This is mainly an ice cream café. The ice cream is tasty and fresh. Coffee is good too—strong and not overpriced.

Atmosphere Calm and relaxing. You can hear the sea nearby and enjoy the view. It’s a great spot to take a break during a walk on the boulevard.

Service Staff are polite and quick. They speak basic English and Russian. No long wait times, even on weekends.

Cleanliness Very clean inside and outside. Tables are wiped often, and the play area is well-maintained.

Prices Fair prices for a tourist spot. Not cheap, but not expensive either. You pay for the experience and the location.

Best Time to Visit Go in the evening when the lights are on—it looks magical. Also cooler and less crowded.

Extra Tip If you’re visiting in winter, check if it’s open. It sometimes closes in the off-season.

Final Thoughts A must-see spot in Batumi, especially with kids. Even if you don’t eat there, it’s worth stopping by for photos...

Ordered 7 drinks and three icecreams while waiting out a thunderstorm. A gust of wind knocked a wine glass off the table and directly the owner started yelling at us. Then the nice waitress explained he said we have to pay 10 Lari for the glass. We explained back that we normally wouldn't mind paying (if this is customary), but the fact we were yelled at for wind blowing though the pavilion is totally rude. The money was not the point....being directly yelled at is ridiculous. Then we were told we had to leave during a thunderstorm with three small children. A really horrible owner here - which is a pity as the people who work under him seem so nice. I really hope everyone who works there finds...
